I'm trying to put something together that's a fun simulation, maybe the two aren't compatible.
I think the bigger picture is that people are dropping out for 3 main reasons:
1) They are getting bored with GT5
2) Warm weather and real racing is coming
3) They aren't competitive
1-Honestly I am bored with GT5 as a game, with the exception of Sunday & Thursday nights it's the only time I play it. I love racing online in a "sim" environment with people who aren't anonymous asshats.
2-I know I won't have my race car out this year, so I'm still enjoying the GT5 & iRacing I'm doing since it'll be the only racing I get to do this year.
3-I'm normally in the top 1/2 of GT5 racing, but I'm always in the bottom 1/2 of iRacing. I would like to be in the top 1/2 for both, but I just don't have the time to put into iRacing. Honestly I just want someone around me to race with, I just want clean racing and I find I get cleaner racing with the ARMS guys.
Getting back to GT5.... I found with the shorter races (sub 25 laps) if you screwed up once (your fault or not) that was it, you were out. With the longer races, a mishap at the beginning of these races do allow you (if you have the pace) to climb back up.
It's not about absolute fastest speed, it's about clean consistency.

I'd like to get back to doing a series like that, not something that if you mess up once, or miss the setup by a bit, then you finish laps down, on a long race driving around for nothing
Mess up once and finish laps down? No. Mess up several times and finish laps down, yes.
We've proven that the FGT even with bent suspension is still very drivable (sometimes even fastest depending who you talk to... Kevin). It's the engine damage that absolutely forces a pitstop.
I think in the Fuiji race my engine was destroyed in the first 6 or 7 laps and I needed to pit, way ahead of schedule. I ran clean for the rest of the race and managed to catch the leaders by the closing laps. It took me nearly 60 laps to catch up, but I did it. Now if I had a damaged engine in a 25 lap race, forget about. Unless it was only minor damage that was on.
Is that something that would help put the "fun" back in this? Switching back to "minor" damage instead of "heavy". I was doing heavy for the sim part, I thought it would promote a little cleaner driving (which I think it does).
If we are tossing the sim part out (which I don't think we should) we could:
-Enable "Low" Boost
-Only cars 1 lap down (or more) can use SOFTS. Cars on the lead lap must use MED or HARD tires (this won't help in the rain)
-PP/HP Limit the faster drivers
As for a bad setup (not enough gears), too stiff suspension, leaving your car in automatic, etc will always be a big issue, just a longer issue for these long races.
Double and even triple check your setup before the race starts. The best way to do this is do 2 or 3 flying laps. One thing to remember is to leave some RPMs free at the end of the longest straight for drafting (if you want). If you don't want to spend the time customizing your gears, just ask someone else what top speed they are running, it'll save you the time of putting a few flying laps in, it may not be perfect, but it'll be close!
If you aren't ready to race, don't be on track. I wait for everyone to be BLUE before I start the race. If you need to step away, exit to the Lounge screen (where you can make adjustments to you car etc). This will show me that you are not ready. We will wait for you if you aren't on track. If you are on track when the call is made that we are starting the race, unless I hear otherwise, we are going to start the race.
Monaco is a tough track. We had 8 cars start the race but only 4 finished it. Of the 4 that finished, 3 of them finished on the same lap. Monaco is the shortest track we've run so far, so the chances of being lapped were much higher, and to have 75% of the finishing field on the same lap at the end is better than our other races.
FWIW I'm going to continue and finish this FGT series. After that I don't know......
As for right now, I'm looking forward to Suzuka....
