I tested both cars... I found neither braked as well as I would have expected (given their weight), and the '96 didn't like to turn in as well as the '04.

On Tsukuba both cars were easily within a second of each other, however I preferred the '04.

I couldn't decide which car to use so I prepared them both!

Lotus Elise RM '96


Lotus Elise 111R RM '04

After practicing with both, I found that the '96 was very tail-happy under braking but controllable under acceleration, whereas the the '04 was the opposite; stable under braking but tail happy under acceleration. Some tuning can help rein-in those negative traits though.

I did about a dozen laps around Tsukuba in the '96 first and managed to get down to a 59sec lap. Then I hoped in the '04 and immediately got a 56 sec lap; 3 seconds faster! Both cars were at 542pp and had nearly identical setups. guess which one I'll be using?

I have both them already, but I'm in the middle of a 24hr race in Bspec right now, so I'll let you know later which one I choose, but I'll be #13 for sure!!

Did some more testing tonight and decided to up the PP limit to 555.
I tested on the Eiger Nordwand Short Track and despite that turn/dip at the bottom of the twisty hill, the car never once wanted to snap on me.

Stock suspension settings, S3 Turbo... just added weight to the front.

Best time was a 1:04.9 after 4 laps.

Testing the RM 96 on the Eiger track and I can only get a 109.091 and she's a handfull at that...bummer as I like the look of the car.

Time to drag out the 111R RM 04 and see what happens...

It would appear that the '04 is the car to have... however I do agree with you Kevin, I think the '96 is slightly better looking.

BTW Kevin even your GT5 photos look fantastic!
Where'd you snap that at? Outside Hanger 7?
Must have snapped it quickly, because it gets dark there VERY fast (under 1min IIRC)!

Black car, red rims, #13, 111R RM '04.
Is it weird that the dip in the power curve bothers the hell out of me?? I like the power curve and the numbers much better on the '96, but the '04 seems to have a better settled chassis.
I have the '96 numbered and painted to match, and reserve the right to change cars up to the first race!!

Yeah, it's weird... The '96 looks better on paper (and pictures), but for some reason the '04 is faster & easier to drive. Oh well.

I'm actually now pulling better lap times around Tsukuba with the 96 after messing around with the diff setting to settle the car down under acceleration, but the 04 is still the harder pulling car. I don't know, I'm going to have to run as many practice laps as possible before then and pick one.

As a side note, we should do a rain race, just to throw a bit more challenge into it, plus racing in the rain is fun!!

I took the 111R RM 04 for a few runs and it's 3 seconds quicker then the 96...but it wears the tires down faster ?
The 6 speed on the 04 is a much nicer tranny then the 5 on the 96...gonna take some noggen rubben to figure dis out ???

Jason I took the picture at the Red Bull air field out back on a runway and I had to wait for the proper lighting to come around and the avatar to stop figgeting...sheeesh!

So wait... did it become light again? (after the darkness)?

I also think that the extra speed is in the gear splits of the 6 speed. I have 15ft-lbs more torque, 12 less HP and almost 40 less KG in the 96, and on a track like Tsukuba I'm running near identical times, but then on Cape ring, the 04 is 2 secs a lap faster.

No the dip bothers me as well.




I found the same thing, at Tsukuba I'm running near identical times (although the '04 is the faster car because it better suits my driving style).

Haven't tried it on a high speed track, but the "High Speed Ring" would be a good test.... or just grab an oval like Indy.

Yes it does become light again after the dark...but it's going to be a while so grab a drink first. I did the positioning and camera set up while I was waiting.

I took another 1.3 seconds off my time in the 111R RM but I can't get the 96 to pull hard enough up those hills...bummer!!

I like the two race evenings for the points!!

This leaves time for shenanigans!!

I decided to purchase both cars again and try building them up to see if I could get the 96 to pull harder and it worked...the only problem was that it became very unstable and at that point I gave up.

I tried a "Very" aggressive LSD set up on the 111R to see if I could lower my times and I ended up wearing the rear tires off the car in 6 laps on the Eiger short track...

I think the 111R's drive train is just better suited to the car....now if they would just allow a supercharger to be installed.

PS. I tried to jamb the 6 speed into the 96 model but no amount of money would allow that to happen...bummer!

What were your LSD settings?
I normally use 10/20/10 (normally 1/2 of what the default values are)

And yea, I found it really weird the SC isn't permitted when IRL (correct me if I'm wrong) it's one of the most popular upgrades to that Toyota engine.

I run my diff WAY stiffer then you guys...in fact, in my NASCAR, I run it full locked, 60/60/60. I have the '96 running 20/50/15, and it works great, and my tire wear was great, even front and rear, and the car was rock solid stable. I always run with a very stiff differential. The '04 I have running pretty much the same as well.

I'll admit I don't fully understand how the LSD settings in GT5 work.
I mean I know how they work in real life, and I've read the GT5 "help" on them, but it's still not crystal clear.
