We are very pleased to announce the birth of the Toyo Tires Spec Miata Championship presented by Atlantic Region Motorsports. The details have been ironed out for this fantastic new 7 race series. The Series Sponsor is of course Toyo Tires. This race series is open to anyone that has a legal Spec Miata and a road race license. We will formally present all the details in the next few days. Some of the competitor incentive will include a Spec Series tire discount (40%), Toyo swag, tow fund, tire product discount coupons, decal kit, Series prizes & contingency prizes. All cars will be classed as SM and they will also be legal to race in the ARMS Sedan GT5 class.

Blu Vandaalen and myself are the series promoters, and the registration process will go through us. Those that have a street legal Miata can also register for this series. They will receive a decal kit and official T-shirt. But of course can not enter a race until their car meets the technical specs. The rule book has been written. This Series will be a multi-year deal and we are working on adding additional sponsors. We realize that this is a start-up year for this Series and the competitor count may be limited. We already have 4 competitors and counting with a few more that may enter throughout the seaon. Championship prizes will be awarded for 1st to 10th place. So if you are interested in building or buying a road race car, please consider this series. It will be lots of fun for everyone and the competition should be exciting. So stay tuned for more information.

I'm interested if someone is looking for a second driver to subsidize their car. :)

We are hoping to make an announcement early next week. The Series is a go. Anyone that wants to get into this series can join any time throughout the season right up until the last race in October. So you have lots of time to buy or build. Stay tuned...

What the guy with the timing slip stands on the wrong side of your car at the finish?

No. Jap spec cars automatically go to 'Street Prepared' in slalom. Even in stock form.

To allow a JDM car into the series, I think we would first have to compare actual model specs between a JDM model & a USDM model to determine what the differences are.

More cars, more racing, more fun. Do we really need more rules?

A certain amount of rules are needed in a spec series, otherwise what's the point?

Having said that, the NA Miatas were pretty much identical NA/JDM, not sure about the NBs.

Aside from the M2 edition which had a minor differences (ie. intake) all the differeces were very minor (trim packages) like Nardi steering wheel/shift knob, Recaro seat etc.

The point for now is to build up the field and get more people into racing.
If there were 40 cars all dicing for the lead I would agree that a minimal number of rules would help "level the playing field". But when there are 3 or 4 cars and the racing skills of those 3 or 4 are widely divergent, all a new bunch of rules will do is keep the numbers at 3 or 4 and the racing will not be particularly close so the whole idea of the rules will be counter productive. Better to ignore rules until there is something to apply them to and then only judiciously.
But that is just my opinion which may be at odds with other people's opinions.

Part of the draw of a spec series (one that tends to serve to draw in more racers/builders), is the fact that the cars are all roughly equal. If we say 'damn the rules' as far as prep goes and a few cars are more equal than others whats the point of the entire exercise? They're just another car in a diminishing field.

I stand corrected. I was suggesting that since the difference between a JDM and the "spec miata" was only a few percent and since racer skills vary much more than that, that any Miata would be acceptable. I did not mean to suggest that someone could drop a small block into one and assume they were able to race in the series because there were no rules. If I mislead anyone who will now have to heave that small block out of the dodgy Miata they bought so they could race, I am sorry.

Keith Tanner is bringing an LS1 powered Miata to Targa this year.

Or, they could just leave it in and run in GT1. We need racers there too!

Here's a great deal on a car easily converted to GT1:

The Roll bar isn't good enough for Spec Miata, though its enough for lapping/schools/sprint at AMP.

There's definitely some amazing deals to have had in the south on Miatas, around here they seem to hold their value more.

But if it's made by Kirk or of the right materials it could be added on to, to make a roll cage, right?

Maybe, but its just a 4 point bolt-through. You'd be better off selling it (Good market for them probably get about $400 or so) and get a full spec cage kit.

You can buy the cage kit for $1050 delivered anywhere in US. Its all notched and pre build. Just weld in together in a weekend. Like Gord said - much easier to sell the bar and buy the complete cage.
