As I am developing my car further I have come to the point where I would like to add some "aero". I am well aware this makes little to no difference in autocross due to speed limitations, but my I intend to do significantly more lapping this year and I feel as though it will be beneficial. This of course is not permitted in STX class, except for what was used on other US "models" of the same vehicle. The only version of the FRS whichadds to my selection is the RS1.0, and its aerodynamic design is no better than my car's.

Listed in section 14 under "Street Touring" in the ASN CANADA FIA NATIONAL SOLOSPORT REGULATIONS for autoslalom, there is a provision for some additional regional allowances.

"Under the provisions of Section 1.1 of these rules, SCCA® Regions are free to allow any other version of the Street Touring® concept which meets the local needs. In particular, some leeway in the area of bodywork allowances (e.g., wings/spoilers beyond those allowed in Section 14.2.F) is encouraged at SCCA® Regional Solo® events. See Sections 3.8 and 8.3.1 for documentation requirements."

Can I have some thoughts in regards to adding an allowance for rear mounted spoilers, diffusers, and front splitters in ARMS? The specific wording is "some leeway in the area of bodywork allowances is encouraged". I want to do this officially as I do not want to be protested. I honestly cannot see this providing me with any advantage in autocross. Additionally the STX pax factor has increased for the 2015 season.

I kept tagging opposite side cones in tight box like corners with a front splitter, so I took it off ...sure it's worth it?

(It did protect my front bumper from cone scrapes nicely though  )

Like I said, it's not really for autocross. Its for lapping and looks. No, it's not being converted into a trailer queen though :p

I think you want removable parts for lapping.

Contrary to what you may think - the right aero mods make a very real differences even at autocross speeds. When aero was less restricted a few years ago, miatas & S2000s would show up with spare trunk lids with with their aero bits mounted (this is a highly competitive SCCA tour events).

or you could change classes so the parts you want are permitted

If you want to do it officially, you will need to send Ming your request so that he and the exec can look at it.

I think the leniency (or possibility thereof) is intended to allow cosmetic body parts, not functional aero.

ie This: Image

But not this: Image

I'm well aware of the proper way to do it Brent, I'm just consulting my fellow competitors first.

I've got thick skin folks, be blunt. So are you saying you disagree with this proposition? I know I could change class, that is obvious. Said classes though are much more expensive (by the order of thousands of dollars) to keep competitive. No, I don't want to swap trunks and remove and reinstall parts.

"Tough luck"is a fine answer.

Thick skin - save money and time by not buying aero bits and get track time and coaching.

Fair enough, but I'm looking for comment on my proposition, not on what modifications you think I should do or where I should allocate my time and money. Thanks anyway though.

So Mike, you would say an allowance for non-functional spoilers might be considered OK, but not a functional one? I am more than open to other interpretations of the quote I noted in the original post. Maybe I took it the wrong way? Does anyone else agree that the noted provision for "regional allowances" would be for non-functional spoilers etc?

I agree with Mike. The provisions are there to remove barriers for new entrants, that is what the ST classes were about originally. Let folks get a taste of the sport without letting existing mods effect their classes at the local level. Also, to permit appearance mods that don't actually make the car more competitive. Difficulty will be in convincing the region that a mod that helps on the track is purely an appearance mod during Solo, especially when the car/driver is already very fast, as you are.

Have you come across any examples of other US or Canadian regions employing the latitude to make exceptions?

I reviewed the section. 14.2.F states:
Quote:
Addition of spoilers, splitters, rear wings, bumper covers, valances, side skirts, and non-functional sccops/vents is allowed provided that either:
1. It is a production part which is standard or optional equipment of a US model of the vehicle. (“Model” is defined in Section 12.3.)
2. It is listed in the vehicle manufacturer’s US accessory catalog or that vehicle for normal highway use. This does not allow for parts sold through a manufacturer’s performance catalog (e.g., Ford Racing, HPD, Mazdaspeed, Mopar Performance, Mugen, NISMO, SPT, TRD, etc).

Parts must be installed as directed by the manufacturer. Exact replicas, including weight, from alternate sources are also permitted.

Seems the intention of #2 seems is to prevent performance parts. I would say the leeway is in those that are purely cosmetic.

I was thinking of maybe going with an adjustable wing and limiting the downforce as much as possible for autocross. I guess I could just remove the main "fin", or turn it upside down haha.

That is a very good question. I'll fire off an email to someone at an appropriate SCCA department and see if they know what has been done in the past. (if anything)

Whichever way you decide to go, don't turn it upside down for slaloms. That could be a performance enhancement same as a proper wing (I'd love some rear end lift in the civic). More likely it'll just be dangerous though. Especially at Digby or AMP.

I'm sure nobody would protest mounting holes, but really - I would not be OK with a real wing or splitter on an already fast car in STX.

"Tough Luck"

And this, I believe, is the kind of answer he was looking for, definitive. Maybe not the exact answer, but an answer.

Sorry Dev I just read this post. But I agree with the rest, it would be to allow apperance minded parts to be installed providing they are providing no areo advantage.

Cool! These are the answers I was looking for. I guess I'll go for no one protesting mounting holes! For non-functional aero, will our stance be simply that no one will protest visual mods of the sort?

Thanks guys.

If anyone wants to write up a protest and submit it to me along with the protest fee, I'll take it. How far it gets is a different story. I was checking out a certain Miata for illegal denture work at Slemon :P
