Great shots, Kevin. Thanks again for posting all these.

I see you managed to catch Scott with his right front off the ground. :)

How do those FSAE cars work? Are they owned by the University? When they come out is it all part of the course or purely recreational? They look like a hell of a lot of fun!

I'm guessing the end goal is to compete in http://formulanorth.com/.

FSAE is basically a big design completion between engineering departments of various schools across NA. Teams are made up entirely of students and the design + driving must be done by them. There isn't actually a lot of restriction on the design so you see some interesting ideas implemented.

Them coming out here is probably more recreational, but I assume they do a bit of testing as well. I think they already competed in formula SAE michigan back in may.

I still kick myself for not getting involved when I went through.

I know how they come to be, but who owns them? Like when they bring them out to our events is it just the guys wanting to have fun or is it part of the design exercise. Does the team actually own the vehicle or is it the property of the university at the end of the day? I haven't actually been at an event where these guys have shown up so I haven't been able to ask.

University property. There are likely many more students involved than just the guys that come to events. Can't say why they're out here.

I wonder if each new crop of students build a new FSAE from scratch or if they inherit the car from their predecessors and work to refine it? Because if it's latter, the university would have a whole fleet of FSAE cars before too long.

Would be a great toy if you could purchase one, but I imagine there are a lot of liability and insurance issues with getting them out of the clutches of the university. :(

Plus there must be way too much money in that car to do a new one every year. Anybody see the steering wheel they had in it? Probably worth more than my car.

They go up for sale on rare occasion
This would've been a very tempting project to pick up if it had been closer - http://www.sccaforums.com/forums/aft/442188

The steering wheel was made by the guys at Dal. Pretty cool from what i can see. They even designed the intake and had it milled out of clear composite. From what i was told that car was just built. Might have used parts from the old FSAE. I am guessing its built around a very tight set of rules. Some of the stuff on the car is not something i would consider great for Autoslalom, but pending on the rules it may be the only way to go. They must be having a blast doing this stuff. Topping it off with heading state-side to go head to head with other University's that have built them.

The guy I was talking to (Keegan) said they were mostly interested in getting some seat time for the drivers. Developing the car was secondary

They make a new car every year. I believe they reuse a lot of components (suspension, engine, etc.) to keep costs somewhat under control.
I don't know what they do with the rest of the car afterwards.

Nick Murray used to be the captain, as did Andy Clement. I'm sure between them and Keegan (I don't know the newer guys) you can ask them all sorts of cool stuff. It was pretty neat seeing them build the car up 2 years ago while I was living with Nick. Went from nothing to something pretty fast (err, not speed wise, although it was quick - I meant build wise)

Hi, I can answer some question about the FSAE car from what I saw being posted, but feel free to ask me more tomorrow (unfortunately the FSAE car won't be there). There has to be a new frame every year. We typically reuse the expensive components (engine, shocks, diff) every year as much as we can. The intake was 3D printed using Stereolithography (shooting lasers at liquid, lots of fun). We are always happy to have interest in the car, and especially enjoy talking to people in detail about it.
