Interested in knowing the official rule whether one is allowed to bike the course instead of walking it! Looking at getting a small folding bike to minimize time used to look at course layout.... (AKA I'm a lazy SOB who is usually borderline late)

No you can not. Its in the rules. Ill dig it up when i am off work. The only way you can get by the rule is if you can not walk/ have walking problems. I remember a few guys who had small motorized buggies. But they had to travel at a walking pace.

3.3.18. Vehicle Restrictions
No motorized vehicle, bicycle or other such device may be used on the course so as to
allow any competitor the advantage of seeing the course at a speed approaching that
achieved in competition. The Steward may authorize the use of such a device to
facilitate the rapid replacement of markers if deemed appropriate

Based on that it sounds like you can do it as long as your speed never "approaches the speed of competition". As long as you're not flying around the course at 20+ kms an hour like Lance Armstrong, it appears that a bike is permitted.

If you were to say someone is "approaching 50kph", you would mean that they are coming somewhat close to it, no?

Except that last sentence. They way we always did it was no. Except if you had a clear reason why not. Also anyone allowed could only travel at a walking pace. I think in digby someone brought a bike, but after watching him try and bike around at a walking pace, no thanks. lol.

Its funny, I was asked last year if someone could bring a small dirt bike out to AMP to get around. The person had good reason as to need it, He didn't use it in the end. I would never say no if someone needed it. I just check with a few people and go from there.

Maybe Ming has a different idea on this.

People have biked the course walk at Slemon before. Not saying that makes it legal or anything.

Obviously I'm no expert, but given my education in logic it seems to me that one could not use anything that could approach the speed of competition, but it does not explicitly say you need to travel at walking speed.

"a speed approaching that achieved in competition" would have to be ~75% of full speed IMO. I can't see that on a small single speed folding bicycle.

I don't want to raise a fuss here, mind you.

A pair of inline skates would be to easier pack in your car. Or even a folding scooter...

However, I believe it would be frowned upon. At least for walking the course. If you use it to get to/from your worker station, that's entirely different.

I guess that's why it's called a course walk, and not a course bike/skate/scoot/etc.

I agree with the course walk statement.

That scooter idea is excellent.

I have a friend who has some mobility challenges who i believe will be attending an event (hopefully more) this summer. I'll let him know he can bring is bike or scooter.

On another random note, what about kartbahn style go carts?!?!?!? That could be fun to take around the course.

And you park on the driveway and drive on the parkway.

For an event like Slemon/AMP/Digby it would be hard to blame someone for wanting to bike the course when it takes a good half hour to walk it
I imagine that most people would learn more from taking it slowly anyway, but to each his own, as long as it is within the rules (as it appears to be, to me)

I took my bike to Digby last year. Not to course-walk, but to get to work stations and to help with course setup. I wouldn't bother for this year.

I read that rule as "you can't use a bike, and this is why." A well placed comma would certainly clear things up.

Moving backwards... FWD to RWD, that is.

Unless you have a valid reason, you cannot bike around the course. Bikes are handy to get around a large event site, however you cannot follow the course on a bike or other contraption unless approved by the organizer. You can use it to get to your worker station or back to the paddock. Just don't follow the course on it.

This has come up a few times in the past. Never happened. Some hate the idea so much, they walk away as soon as you ask. lol. I read some of the rules for Karts once. I think all the runoff space needed is almost doubled. I dont understand why because Karts tend to come to a stop quickly when they spin. But i am not a rule maker.

Anyway, yes they would be fun, but the region dosn't allow Karts. I feel this is the main reason why, when the kids/adults leave Kart they go straight to Scotia Speed World. They race Karts there and that attracts them. Cheap racing and lots of it. I would be willing to bet less then half the current Kart drivers have not been to AMP to watch a race. And AutoSlalom is the First true step and best step to get to Road Racing in this area. I bet half the drivers at AMP have done Autoslaloms more or less before they raced.

It's not region that doesn't allow karts. It's from national.

The rule hasn't changed. George was on a bike at Slemon. I talked to him. Was there someone else?

George and Ralf were both on bikes at Slemon and no one seemed to care
Didn't bother me - I still don't think that a casually driven bicycle can obtain a speed "approaching that
achieved in competition", so I personally don't think it is a rule infraction anyway
That said, there should be consistency

It's all kinda silly really. I mean, if someone were so inclined they could run through the course and achieve essentially the same result yet still be in compliance. The rules assume we're all out of shape.

To get any sort of competitive advantage from a speed/line of sight situation on a bicycle, you would need to be going fast enough that focusing on your possible line through the course in a car would be the last thing on your mind.

Having said that, I bet a really strong cyclist could get through a tight course fast enough to get some folks attention...

However, its fairly universal everywhere, no bikes during a course walk, really see no reason to change that here.
