Hey everyone, I just thought I'd make a quick thread to introduce myself here, as well as hopefully get a few simple questions answered.

First off, a little background. My name is Jordan Milne, and while I've been a car enthusiast for as long as I can remember, I'm just starting to get into the track/autoslalom scene. I currently drive a lightly modified E36 M3 that I picked up last summer. Before that, I had a 325is that I brought out to the ASCC HPDS last May. Anyone who was there will remember me as the guy who had a radiator failure coming out of turn 2. Despite that unfortunate episode, it was one of the most fun days of my life, and I can't wait to get back into it this year. I picked up the M3 shortly after that, and have spent the last year getting it to the point where i'm comfortable tracking it. This year, I want to get more involved, and plan on participating in as many Lapping and Time Trial days as possible. On top of that, I want to start participating in AutoSlalom whenever I can.

That brings me on to my question: how does one go about getting your car classed, and signing up for the actual AutoSlalom events? I'm signed up for the ASCC school again, so I'm good as far as Lapping goes. I've done a lot of looking around here, and on the ASCC website, and can't seem to sort out the process for getting started in AutoSlalom. I see that the first event is May 4th, and I'd like to have everything set so I can participate.
On a related topic, is there any sort of Test & Tune day before that? Having never had this car out on the track, I wouldn't mind having a chance to dial it in a little bit.

Off the top of my head e36 M3 can run the following classes: C stock, street touring ultra, B Street prepared, Street mod. Once you get past SM prep I'm not sure where it lands.

General rules of thumb:

1) A mod isn't allowed in a class unless it explicitly says so.
2) Classes with more prep usually allow you any mods from classes with lower prep. At the start of the section it will state what other class rules it allows. Example: "15.1.A - All Allowable modifications permitted in Section 13, Stock Category are allowed"

It's a hell of a lot of reading, but that's just the way it is. If you have a full mod list it'd be easier for someone to help, a few of us a pretty good with the rules.

As far as how to be prepared to compete in an autocross, just show up early and bring a safe car (and your entry fee)
You'll want to be early enough to walk the course a few times before the event begins and it'll give you time to chat with the other people there (everyone is generally quite friendly)
Entry is (I think) $15, as long as you're already a member of a club
Bonus things to bring- Water/snacks/helmet/comfy shoes/tools

Thanks for the responses guys, just what I was looking for. I'm glad to hear that it's okay to just show up on the day, I was mostly concerned about pre-registration. It sounds very easy to get started, which is awesome.

I have been through those documents a bit, but not in very much detail. When I have a bit of spare time, I'll read them all again, and do my best to figure out how to class my car. Once I get to that point, maybe I'll post a full mod list and you guys can see whether I got it right or not.

Hey Jordan, good to see a new slalom participant. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to arrange an autoslalom school this year, so there is no opportunity to practice before the first event. Just plan to come out and have fun. There will be lots of knowledgeable people around that are more than willing to help. As someone new to slalom, you can also take an experienced driver with you if you prefer.

The biggest learning curve is usually reading the course layout, and driving slower than you think you should until you do...

Alright, I finally got the chance to look through all of the documentation. It's a lot of reading, but everything was surprisingly easy to understand. I think I know what class I should be in, but I wouldn't mind confirmation from someone who knows better than I. Below is a list of my relevant modifications.

1997 BMW M3 Coupe

8.5" rear wheels on all 4 corners (originally staggered)
245 mm square street tires
H&R OE Sport springs, Bilstein Sport shocks
Swapped front strut mounts for -3.5 degrees of camber
Adjustable rear lower control arms, - 2.5 degrees camber
Lightweight flywheel and carbon-kevlar clutch disk
M50 intake manifold conversion
Deleted ASC/traction control (removed secondary throttle body and actuator)
Euro M3 3 spoke Alcantara steering wheel with airbag
Engine driven fan deleted, replaced with electric unit
Stewart high flow water pump
UUC TSE cat-back exhaust


I think that's it. As far as I can tell, that puts me into the Street Prepared category, where the E36 M3 is listed in the B Street Prepared class. I'm fairly sure that's correct, but confirmation from someone with more experience would be awesome. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

BSP is correct. Mainly because of the M50 manifold, lightweight flywheel, ASC delete and radiator/fan. Looks like I'll have some competition then.

Glad to see you're in the same class Scott, should be fun. Quick question that you should be able to answer: is the stock battery tie-down in the M3 sufficient? It has never struck me as being particularly effective, and it only really holds the battery down on one end.

stock battery tie down are fine as long as the battery is not loose.
