If (and a big if) I were to buy a 2WD rally car (anyone can drive 4WD, LOL) for next year, is there anyone available/willing to be my navigator? I'd prefer someone with "some" experience.

There's been a few navigators who have cycled through the right seat over the last few seasons, I expect you could find someone fairly easily.

Love to see more 2WD cars out there!

I know nothing about this car other than what you see here. Seems too cheap to be true.

I'd have no issues using a Miata for a tarmac rally, ie: Targa. But for a gravel stage rally; NO WAY!!!!!

From what I've seen (turns 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, and 11 at least) Miatas LOVE being off road!

I have traction issues with AWD on asphalt, let alone turbo FWD on dirt. 8O

Bruce you could create your own! Bring someone along and let them get the bug!

Having said that, you are quite correct, it's very reassuring to have someone in the right seat whom you trust.

There are a few in the region now with some seat time. (Targa, National CARS, Regional CARS, Sprint etc etc.) I'll let them introduce themselves here.

-I

PS> 2WD would be awesome. Miata even more so!!!

Nope, wont happen in a Miata. I absolutely would not rally a rear wheel drive car. It would have to be a front drive car only.

Ron/Gord, what are the rules pertaining to engine mods for the front drive? Can I build a HP beast, front drive and still compete in the 2WD class?

Open class is nearly skies the limit. There's some new national classing coming next year that limits all engines to <2.5L whether NA or Turbo, but if you go open class there's not a lot of restriction from there. (Though there are minimum weights and whatnot)

What we're going to run regionally is TBD. The new national rules are... controversial and none of the other regions are taking them on.

You mean I have to write them? Damnit! :)

Whatever gets decided will be at the AGM. Let me know in PM what you're thinking and I can give you some feedback on what might affect you in advance if you want.

Even as the rules stand now Bruce, you can build a Group 2 car with lots of HP if it's normally aspirated.

Let me dig out my rule book, and I'll post it here.

(IE Scott's CRX would be GR2, and Production 2WD if the new rule set Gord mentioned goes through?)

Bruce:

This is from the 2012 rule book. Touch base with Gord, there are some changes afoot. Anything logbooked today or later must have a cage built to FIA 253. (The common Rallycar Cage.) That spec to my knowledge is not up for change.

12.4.9 Vehicle Eligibility
The vehicle must be based on a model built by a recognized manufacturer. The manufacturer must be
listed in the NADA Official Used Car Guide. It is the intent of these rules that all vehicles be based on
production vehicles. Eligibility is restricted to street-licenced, closed-bodied vehicles. Non-production based
vehicles built from the ground up, are explicitly prohibited.

12.4.10 Displacement Limits
For all vehicles having a log book issued after Jan. 1, 2001, the cubic capacity is limited as follows:
12.4.10.1 For normally aspirated engines:
3000 cc maximum for two valves per cylinder.
2500 cc maximum for more than two valves per cylinder.
5100 cc maximum for two wheel drive vehicles.

If you ever want what you build to run a national event don't build over 2.5L base displacement. There's literally no class for 2.6L+ as of next year.

I would prefer to buy Scott's CRX for around that price tag.

Toronto, but it looks like that pretty much just needs a cage and its ready to go.
