My PlayStation 3 has been down for a couple weeks now. It has stopped reading / recognizing discs. They don't even show up in the Game menu after inserting them.

Thinking (hoping) it might be a software issue, I ran a full backup (90GB... took 6+ hours!), and did a system restore (another 7+ hrs!). But the problem persists. I'm thinking it might be the laser.

Anyone dealt with this before?

Fat or Slim PS3?

I've heard of these issues with Fat PS3s.... they have a high failure rate due to heat issues.

Slim, only 2-3 years old (but heavily used).

I don't get any error messages neither... It just ignores the disc completely.

Try some compressed air......

FYI - I'd recommend backing up your GT5 Savegame Data on a regular basis to a USB thumbdrive.
It only takes a few seconds. This goes double for those with fat PS3s.

I've done both... game save data (regularly) and a full PS3 system backup.

This is one of the common issues with the PS3 (along with the YLOD). There are many guides online with how to repair this. But usually your best bet is to find someone on kijiji and get them to fix it. It usually only costs $30-$40 (plus the cost of parts if required).

Just to follow up, it was the laser that caused my problem. I took it to the KonsoleKing in Hammonds Plains, and he fixed it up in less than 24hrs. Cost me $80. Great service!

Not sure. I don't have enough free time to practice (and work on setups) for two racing sims and still remain competitive on both. So I've been focusing on the one I find most realistic / rewarding.

I have DiRT3 (PC) here too, but have only managed to spend a total of 5 minutes on it.

Dirt 3...sounds like fun and it supports multi monitors !!! :D

I use GT 5 as a break from Iracing but then again "I'm like a babe in the woods" on Iracing. :P

I did manage to make a few FFB and wheel adjustments in Iracing that made a 1 sec per lap decrease in my times...go figure...the rest is all in my head.
