Might be a normal fwd coupe with aftermarket flares and a 5000 awd drivetrain ...but it made me stop and think about it for a minute! (i'd proabably be all over it if it was closer...)

While the UR is valued in a lot of circles, it's performance numbers in stock trim would be close to a FWD coupe, with flares, and a 5000Q drivetrain.

Hmmmm, and the 5000 CIS engine would have a lot more bits out there....

Your closer than we are Stacey, and we are having an absolute hoot down here in Rallysprint land!!! It's still Das Auto, so your in good company with the other German cars in your fleet......

Do it!!

I now have 2 turbo Volvos for sale, both 85s. One is a wagon and one is a sedan, both automatics. 1 good motor and 2 of everything else. Both are western cars, BC and Alberta, so no rust! I'd like to get $1250 for the pair.

I'm looking at a S70 T5 today, but if that doesn't work out, I might be interested in these cars.

Which one has the good motor and are they low or high pressure cars? I'd love to get some more info and pics. I have a line on a M56 manual setup that is looking for a car to call home.

The wagon has the good engine ,but no papers. The sedan has papers and a bad engine. There are 4 new all season tires and 2 new winters. Not sure what you mean by high or low pressure. Like I said, you will have 2 of everything including rad, intercooler, alternator, suspension pieces. And all of it is rust free, everything comes apart so easy!

Thanks for the info. I'll be in touch after I look at the S70 later today.

There were essentially two different turbo motors available (if you don't start counting the R variants), There's a 2.4L that has a 13g turbo and only runs something like 7psi, and then there are the 2.3L engines with a larger 15g turbo and I think they run somewhere around 10psi, afterwards the x70 chassis used a 16t at 10.5psi in the T5 cars. I can't remember the exact numbers, but they're in those ranges.

Oh man, I just realized that you were trying to sell two 1985 740s. I saw '85s' and assuming that it was short hand for 850s. The info that I provided regarding high and low pressure setups was for a P80 chassis (850,S70,V70,C70), and is completely irrelevant for a 740, or 240 chassis. My bad.

I thought of going to see if it would make a starting point for
a performance rally car.

I haven't figured out if I want to buy someone else's used rally car
or start from scratch.

The 740?

Google Karl Yardevalle, or yellow school bus.

:)

Now mind you, he was a natural.

These are the first Volvos I ever owned. Is the B230ft a good solid motor to get some performance out of? I'm talking 200-250 hp. Volvos have always had a rep as a tough car, is it all advertising or is it true? After looking at the yellow school bus I'm not sure if I want to sell my pair of 740's.

Make no mistake, Karl's yellow school bus was a very well prepared car, but you should be able to make 200bhp for a joke, and 250 within reach.

I think that car still holds the record for a 2WD car on the famed Brooklin Tavern stage, only 30sec or something silly slower than the new record in an EVO 8.

The old addage for a B21FT was 350bhp bottom end, head was good for 300bhp flow rate, but the stock injection was only able to sustain enough flow for 225bhp. (A used SAAB APC of a 900 Turbo and a rising rate FP regulator solved some of this) The 230 series engines did not have quite the same bearing area, so lower your expectations accordingly. 225bhp in a 740 would be a very fun and driveable Group 5 package with minimal mods needed to make it last.

From my volvo days, and all the hours of wasted :P volvo studying over the years, the 740 is good, but the 240 was a slightly better rally platform.
Having said that, if you have enough 740 bits for the build, then your direction is clear.

Both shells are tough tough cars. My family has been through dozens, and 400k mileages are common. The simplicity and ease of work is epic.

Come join us Ian, we're having a blast out there!!!

^^ I agree with Ian, your 740(s) could be fun, especially if you already have a parts car. I used to run my 88 740 wagon with some simple mods and it was surprisingly fast. Unfortunately, electrical gremlins got the best of it. The pre-90 motors aren't as strong, but if you keep things conservative and keep things from getting too lean, you'll be fine. My mods cost me somewhere in the $500-$600 range since I built what I could and the rest I bought used. I was in my early 20' at the time so there were some questionable decisions made, but you get the general idea. The wagon was quick enough to embarrass some fox body 5.0s and leave them scratching their heads. 8)
Here's a quick look at it: http://gallery.me.com/matteakin/100058/ ... 2483260001
A quick rundown on my mod list:
-Adjustable cam gear built from an OEM gear, think I had it set at -4 degrees...can't remember
-Slotted 'A' cam
-MSD Blaster coil and custom made wires, gains are debatable, but my stock stuff was tired
-'brown top' injectors from a T-Bird Turbo Coupe (ran fine with the OEM greens though)
-K&N conical attached directly to the MAF, and high beam lamp removed (ghetto ram air!)
-Home made manual boost controller running at 15psi, you might want to think about a reputable brand though to help with the boost spikes
-3" turbo back exhaust with just a 24" baffled resonator.....quieter than you'd think.
-Cut coils on stock suspension.....and a very questionable, dual swaybar setup that I don't recommend

Don't forget to add a boost gauge and an A/F gauge, especially if you stay with the sock tune.

Get to know Dale at Avalanche Performance in Calgary. He's 245gti on Turbobricks.com, and makes a lot of parts that you would be interested in. Your tranny is likely going to be your weak spot and he sells a nice conversion kit to run a T5 tranny from a V8 mustang: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=250015

Some volvo pic's:

http://teamjardevall.com/phot2000.htm

Car later went to Jay Streets. Carl ran it 99-01 for sure.

I had the spelling incorrect: Carl Jardevall. That should get you more Volvo Slander. :)

Who wants to go in on an entire racing team worth of Volvo 240's? 7 cars (2x 242 and 5x 244) as well as a 480ES Turbo safety car. The entire lot has to go as a package and it's in Finland. The 242s definitely have my attention.

I wonder what shipping would cost for 2 containers worth of cars to get to Halifax........kind of/sort of/can't decide if I actually am serious about this

Located out west. 1992 Sentra SE-R Rally car for a good price. Solid car and there's a hojillion parts available for these things. DMS, LSD, all the good acronyms.

The only info I could get was through Google Translate on that site. They're caged, but that's as much info as I could get. A spec 240 series would be something I would be all over. It looks like the shipping isn't too crazy, about 1,200 euros to get the car to Halifax. That's about the same, if not cheaper, than putting a car on a train in Vancouver, or on a transport from the southern states. If you shipped all of them at once, you could likely get a cheaper rate as well........I really need to stop thinking about this before I do something that I'll regret.

If it wasn't in Alberta, probably a good deal.

I have friends and family in Calgary as well as a lot of free time on my hands. You might be able to convince me fly over for a quick visit and drive it back if you covered travel expenses. :D

Option 2: I'm actually looking in to some 240's in the area, so I might be able to tow it with the Volvo. I'd have to disable the AWD before I put it on a dolly though.

Last time I did this, it took me 5-6 days to tow from Calgary to Halifax. I slept in car though, so a winter trip might not be the smartest idea.....anyhow, those are details that could be sorted out if you were serious about getting the car.

Do it Dave!

Get ahold of Berry and get it on a train. Work out a deal with Matt, anything to have it. The whole Laser timeline can be relieved, but with cage!
