MK1 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit / GTI / Track / Race

Image

Image

After 20 years in the VW game it's time to part with my MK1 Rabbit for something different. This is NOT a daily driver and is better suited for auto-x / track use.

Here are the details:

Body:

GTI wheel arches
GTI grille
GTI front lower air dam
Custom front lower chin spoiler
Deleted rear wiper
Deleted passenger side mirror
Deleted front/rear bumpers
Deleted spare tire tub
Good glass all around
Little to no rust on body and under-body
Not pretty but sturdy silver paint

Chassis:

B3 Front knuckles/hubs w/100mm axles
B3 Front calipers/rotors
B3 Rear stub axles
B3 Rear calipers/rotors
16V Rocco Master & Booster w/new front intermediate brake lines
Close ratio manual steering rack
Tokiko Blue dampers / Single rate race springs
14" Enkei light weight wheels / recently refinished w/custom centers
Toyo T1R slicks

360 CC injectors w/new seals
Custom fuel rail
Custom short runner intake manifold
VR6 Throttle body w/TPS
Custom 3" exhaust from manifold back
Wide band o2 sensor
Exhaust temp probe
Complete hydro transmission setup
Stacked gear shift selector box w/fresh cables

Optima Red top battery

Interior (spartan):

MK1 GTI front seats
MK1 GTI dash
MK2 Gauge cluster w/customer gauge faces
Integrated VEMS digital display unit
Push button ignition
Oil pressure / Oil temperature / Volt gauges
Deleted spare tire tub
Deleted rear interior

Spares:

Complete low KM 9A 2.0 16V on stand
Coveted 4K (close ratio) linkage shift transmission
Spare hood - zero rust
Spare hatch - zero rust
NOS rear pan
Front upper strut bar
Front lower sway bar
Totes upon totes of parts (harnesses / fuel injection / switches / etc)
Aluminum catch can - NIB
Small front mount intercooler w/down pipe
Lots more I am forgetting...
This MK1 is strong and very solid, it has embarressed cars with far better stats (on paper) in all areas and has always auto-x'd very well. If you are a VW enthusiast looking for a toy with tons of potential this may be for you. If you are looking for something to drive to work and back don't even bother me. I don't need the money and I am not going to give it away. I will NOT part it out and if you ask me what it needs for MVI, I am not going to respond.

Reasonable / Serious offers will be considered in person only... Drop me a line to arrange a viewing.

Thanks for looking.

I see that car most days near work. Next to an Audi S4, some series 1 Defenders, and a Lotus Elise that is the same orange as the wheels on that GTI. Looks pretty solid from what I've seen.

Okay, so maybe not a 'GOOD' race car, but definitely interesting. :)

There is a build thred on locostusa.com on this car. He build it for ice racing. From the videos he posts, I don't think he ever lost a race. Very quick. And AWD.

I'd bet the car is actually in Gander. I've seen it a bunch at Targa, seemed to work well. Wayne Lorezen and Brad Melendy ran it for a few years. Seemed to work pretty well for them! I don't recall them having any particular reliability issues with it either.

Neat how the some of the roll cage is done exactly the same way as one of my cars ...Maybe the're cousins?

BTW here's a pricey candidate for a "Good truck for sale" thread in St Quetin, NB

I found a Datsun 510 Race Car for sale on the BaT (Bring a Trailer) website. Also on Ebay- #321927177886, located just North of Jacksonville, FL, in a town called Yulee. Be a great competitive car in GT2, and a a pretty good price for a sorted out race car.
I will be in that part of Florida on the 26th & 27th January if anyone wants me to take a serious look at it for them.

Here are 3 interesting race cars for sale on E-Bay from 1 end of the $ scale to the other.
1. 72 Datsun 240Z originally driven by John Morton for $90,000.00 E-Bay # 351054484623

2 59 Devin V-8 , a beautiful fast vintage race car with mechanical fuel injection for $20,000.00
E-Bay #231206457217

3. 60 Alfa Romeo Spider, #86 with a SCCA race history , very sad neglected condition in Maryland. Somebody should be hanging their head in shame to let this happen.
E-Bay # 218314930542

For those who would like to race Datsun 510's and come out and play with our Cortina, BAT (Bring a Trailer) has come up with a real beauty- see on EBay #201081839280. Located in New York.

Gerry are you serious? Racers around here hardly have $800 to spend on a race car let alone eighteen thousand dollars! Lol

Not really serious, but food for thought. There are 3 Datsun 510's in this region which only come out to play every once in a while. And they are all from NB. Sure would be nice if they ran at AMP on a regular basis. At least we show up, even if we do "break" from time to time.
If someone showed up with that NY 510, we would probably be looking up his tailpipe, but it would be fun trying to get by him.
There are those out there with the money who could easily afford it- there are some pretty high priced race cars in this region.

It does suck that there are so many PARKED racecars in this region. I can think of 4 within 1 Hour of the race track. Brian P and myself figured it out before the start of last season, and if everyone came out and raced, we would have to cap the 1 hour race. The combination of GT and SM would have been around 33 cars!!!!!

On top of that, i would guess there is around 10 Open wheel cars sitting in garages. or maybe more.

I fully understand racing is exspensive. I couldnt have gone racing without Paul Susnis offer. Combine that with the help from Derrick at the shop and my view on racing has been great. So for the guys who cant do it due to the $$$, thats fine. but I know a few who go on about politics, or i dont like this person or that person. Yup so by the time the politics change (never) or the person you dont like leaves, racing will be dead. Because the people you dont like keep supporting it. Bruce is right, we wont be seeing $20,000 vintage cars making a comeback. But what about making a chumpcar class. Were they must stay basicly stock and safty in open. look at people in the region. Racing out of region and leaving there running racecar home. Why? Different track. Okay. But if there was a chump car bassed class would you build a car for AMP?

LeMons/Chump seems like a whole hell of a lot of fun, but I just can't see it ever happening here. Its less about the cost/prep of the vehicle and more about the more laid back aspects of rules and enforcement.

Mitch weren't you at the ARRCA meeting..?

You know what the official line on having fun is: a $5M insurance policy.

BTW, there is a chumpcar class. It's called Spec Road Racer (SRR), mooted by Jeff Martin.

Essentially it was a class for the thunder class or whatever the 4-bangers that race at Scotia are called.

LeMons/Chump is a whole lot more than just the cheapass cars.

Haven't raced Lemons, but going into my second season of chump. From what I've read Lemons is a bit more relaxed/zany with Chump a little more serious (no weird penalties in Chump or really over-the-top theme cars) but both their regs are as long as the ARMS GCR. Both are very close to the racing series here in terms of safety regs and safety equipment (they have to get insurance at the other tracks). About the only significant difference safety wise is that they don't require a head-neck restraints (yet), however they highly recommend them. In some cases they exceed the safety regs here (fire suppression systems for example). So that "$500 car" is several times that by the time you throw in all the safety gear and there's the driver's gear on top of that.

Operating costs for chump/lemons are similar to running here based on talking to a few local drivers. The cars may be cheaper to start with, but getting them to the track isn't (12 hour tow anyone?) with fuel/tires/brakes etc. are about the same per track time. The workload and maintenance is a little easier as usually you split the load between a few team mates (i.e 3-4 people working on a car instead of just 1).

The only real difference in the cars is that they limit what can be done to one to try to keep costs down. However, start with the right car and you can do quite a bit to it. For example we took what had been an ITB prepped Neon and ran it last season without going over the spending limit. And while some of the cars are "theme" cars or basically running stock, there are some very well prepped cars in Chump. Chump also run an EC class for cars that have too many upgrades, which allows cars from other series like SCCA and SM, and these cars mix in well with the other cars. EC cars don't count in the Chump standings but if there are enough EC cars they'll give awards to the class top finishers, and it gives these drivers a chance to race their cars at some bucket list tracks.

The biggest obstacle to running chump here is that we are far away from other markets. The Ontario events were only getting about 20-30 entries which is about the break even point (might be lower here, depending on track fees). They have been trying to get events going in Quebec but have had to cancel them because they can't get drivers to tow from from Ontario and the US to lesser known tracks (ICAR, St- Eustache anyone?). Getting them here I expect would be even harder because of the greater distance and we don't have the draw of places like Daytona or Watkins Glen. That said if there was enough local interest that we wouldn't need many "from away" entries I think it would be possible to get Chump interested in an event here. Would give a chance for people to dust off/complete a few project cars plus would give a chance to get a few more drivers into racing for relatively cheap. In addition, getting AMP on the Chump schedule with tracks like Daytona, Watkins Glen, Road America, Laguna Seca, etc. would certainly get the track some additional exposure. But the local interest would need to be there.

Maybe I should buy it, then I could have something to drive at Digby
