I really liked the star gate setup NBSCC used at ARMS event #2. Not only did it limit pavement scratching and rubber being laid, but it made it easier on people's clutches, tires, and drivetrain (while maintaining a fair start style IMO). Is there any reason why this would not be advantageos to use at ASCC events? The only thing I can think of is it uses slightly more space.... Thoughts?

As an owner of two AWD cars, I don't like it.

And as an owner of a RWD, I don't either but I can see that it would keep the wheelspin down. IMO it would take up too much room in small lots.

I think it's a cool idea and a nice way to add variety... but I'm happy that every event doesn't do it that way

Can you explain the star gate setup?

But seriously, for those that weren't there... did they just give move distance between the start line and the start of the timer?

Take a look at the start of my onboard. You'll see some yellow pylons stacked on top of orange ones and the timing equipment right after them.

The start line was a bit of distance away and 90° to the timer, negating any effort to launch your car.

The port was very concerned that we would damage the pavement.

We have had other lot owners complain about the scratches in both the start and stop box. that was also the reason for that little cone at the stop box.

as an added bonus the cones before the start light counted as 2 second penalties if you knocked them down as well.

For 1 event a year or 2 I dont mind it. Was different, But it completly takes away a very important part of Autocross. THE START. lol. Bogging, spinning, getting it right. Its part of the sport. I fully understand why they did it, as Adam stated and have no complaints. But its almost my favorite part of the run to watch. How people launch. It can make or break your run.

As a guy who can't launch, I love it. Would have been even better in the Hybrid!

I feel like the launch is one of my stronger points, I was just thinking about how it would eliminate the portion of autocross which is most detrimental to our vehicles "health".

No worries! I can't say I don't like spinning ;)

I have to say I am with Joel on his one. It was different from what we generally do and it served its purpose, however the launch is like he said one of the most exciting parts of the events and can ultimately make or break a run. It adds another element to the competition.

For what its worth from an organizer standpoint I always cringe seeing the pavement at the startline when the day is over. Rubber goes away, carving off the top of the seal after 150+ hard launches doesn't look good for the lot owners.

Also a kinked start is part of a proper equalizing course vs power/drivetrain.

And if you watch the Dick Turner Video's there is actual proof that spinning the tires does NOTHING for you. Autoslalom is about CONTROL not speed. that means control in the launch, control in the corners and control in the stop box. I do admit that I have spun the tires and slid into the box on more then one occasion. But still try my best to get a clean launch and keep the wheel spin to a minimum. cause if it is spinning it is not going forward.

I don't spin with AWD, just some brief tire slip. 8)

Remember too that your time doesn't start until you break the laser. Spinning at the start a little won't hurt you, you'll just start the timer a little later
