FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE;

PATRICK GALLAGHER WINS MAZDA SHOOTOUT-- Ohio SCCA Racer Tops Final-Four To Score Biggest Prize in Club Racing --

November 15, 2012 (Irvine, Calif.) Patrick Gallagher had an impressive racing resume last week. Now he can add 2012 Mazda Club Racer Shootout winner to his list of accomplishments. Gallagher will follow in the footsteps of Andrew Caddell, Brad Rampelberg, Justin Piscitell, Nick Evans, Scott Shelton, and Elliott Skeer, the six previous Mazda shootout winners.

He also joins the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Driver ladder, which includes the Mazda Road to Indy, program class of 2013. The MAZDASPEED ladder has been a critical part of the success of up-and-coming racers including Raphael Matos, John Edwards, Conor Daly, Joel Miller, Matthew Brabham, Connor De Phillippi, Dane Cameron, Jack Hawksworth, Stevan McAleer, Jason Saini, Todd Lamb, Eric Foss, Michael Cooper, Trent Hindman, Danilo Estrella, Adam Christodoulou, Sage Karam, Spencer Pigot, Felix Serralles, Tristan Vautier, Petri Suvanto, Scott Anderson, and Yago Cesario

When told that he had won the shootout, a prize valued at $75,000, the richest in all of club racing Gallagher was almost speechless, " I don't quite know what to say, It is amazing to have this opportunity.
A huge thanks to everyone who helped me get to this point, Mazda, my parents, Howard Concrete Pumping, JAY Motorsports, CTL Engineering, and HKC Support. There is a reason there are more Mazda's road raced on any given weekend than any other brand, they build the best cars in the world and I am honored to have the opportunity to be a part of their family.."

The four shootout finalists were:
• Kenton Koch, Skip Barber Racing School MAZDASPEED Challenge Summer Series Champion
• Patrick Gallagher, SCCA Formula Enterprises Champion
• Bruce McNutt, Nova Scotia Spec Miata Champion
• Yiannis Tsiounis, NASA Spec Miata Champion

Charles Espenlaub, who has participated in the selection process in all six previous competitions, commented on the deliberation process; “I am absolutely amazed with the incredible level of talent at the Mazda Club Racer Shootout. This competition this year was the closest ever. The judging process was extremely difficult and made for a virtual photo finish at the end. Congratulations to the competitors, a lot was learned, new friendships formed and the Mazda family gets a little bigger. Good luck to next year’s Mazda Club Racing Champions, but a word of advice...You better bring your A-game to this competition, only the best will do!”

The criteria: Given that each of the finalists had proven themselves on the track by winning a championship, the criteria to move up needed to be more encompassing. To succeed on the professional level requires a balance of both on-track and off-track skills including the following:
• Driving ability – fast laps
• Driving ability – consistent laps
• Technical feedback – Understanding of vehicle dynamics and suspension
• Technical feedback – Ability to evaluate vehicle handling
• Technical feedback – Ability to analyze data
• Technical feedback – Ability to improve vehicle handling
• The business of motorsports – Business proposal
• The business of motorsports – Business presentation
• The business of motorsports – PR / Social Media Skills

The driving sessions were conducted at Buttonwillow Raceway Park using a Mazda MX-5 Playboy Cup Car prepared by Tri-Point Motorsports.

The judges: Each year Mazda invites a panel of outside judges to make the selection. The judges brought a wealth of both on-track and off-track expertise. Over a dozen professionals were involved in the preliminary business proposal review, on-track activities, or both. The 2012 panel consisted of:

• Jonathan Bomarito – Professional Mazda racer, SpeedSource
• Charles Espenlaub – Professional Mazda racer, Dempsey Racing
• Pete Evanow – College of Communications and Business, Cal State Fullerton
• John Fabijanic – College of Engineering, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
• Eric Foss – Professional Racer, MAZDASPEED ladder alum
• Karl Koenigstein – Michelin North America
• John Morton – Sports car racing legend
• Mo Murray – Just Marketing, Inc.
• Lisa Natale – Marketing Consultant, Playboy
• Dan Passe – Passe Consulting Inc.
• Jason Penix – Director of Grassroots Initiatives, IndyCar
• Jeremy Shaw – Team USA Scholarship
• Scott Shelton – Director, ABC Full Circle, MAZDASPEED ladder alum
• Steven Cole Smith – Freelance Journalist

The tally: After a full day of both driving, and classroom activities, the judges added the objective and subjective scores -- discussing the merits of each driver. The judges deliberated carefully before declaring Gallagher the 2012 champion.

The prize package: The total prize package is valued at over $75,000 and is the largest prize in club racing.
• $50,000 for the running of his car for the season
• $10,000 in parts support
• A MAZDASPEED driving suit and helmet
• Professional media training (Courtesy of MAZDASPEED)
• BFGoodrich tires, one set per race (Courtesy of BFGoodrich Tires)
• 2013 entry fee waivers (Courtesy of SCCA Pro Racing)

About Mazda & MAZDASPEED

Mazda is the number-one brand for road-racers across North America. Thousands of Mazda powered grassroots racers compete in various classes with the SCCA and NASA highlighted by Spec Miata, the world’s largest spec class with over 2,500 cars built. In 2006 Mazda established the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Ladder to assist racers in moving up through the ranks. In 2010 this was expanded to include the Mazda Road to Indy. Key to Mazda’s success is strategic partnerships with the Skip Barber Racing School and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

MAZDASPEED Motorsports is managed by Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). MNAO is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States and Mexico through nearly 700 dealers. Operations in Mexico are managed by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

Gotta respect someone who actually goes out and races against the best instead of standing around talking about it. If only they had these kinds of programs 20 years ago, eh Bruce?

Thanks very much! Yeah that would have been nice 20 years ago for sure.

Patrick is only 20 years old and a university student taking Engineering (I tried to talk him out of that, LOL). He has been racing since he was 6. He was super nice/friendly, smart, talented and well presented. I’m glad that kid won. He deserved it!

I did feel a little out of place. That was a new MX-5 Cup car that I never drove before. A little heavier, a lot more HP, new BFGoodrich race tires that I never used before, on a track that I’ve never seen. They gave me a whole 15 minutes of practice before the evaluation process begun. Two of these guys own MX-5 Cup cars on BFG rubber and 2 have raced at Buttonwillow before. So I think I had a little disadvantage happening there right from the start. But at the Pro level they throw you in the lion pit straight up and see if you can swim. I swam as fast as I could and crawled out of the pit with lots of claw marks! Really, no excuses.... It was an amazing experience.

Oh, btw, apparently I’m not “old”, I’m “experienced”. I was corrected on this a few times.

I'll post some photos soon.

You did great to make it into that final four - there's some pretty serious competitors there! I think you did us all proud by just by being there. I hope you had a great time.

Of course, we all wish it was us  .

PS - Get any hot tips from that NASA spec Miata guy? He probably knows a thing or two about Miata racing.

He wouldn't say if he did, looking to repeat again next year, and obviously Blu isn't looking for a repeat of this year.....that's pretty obvious!

Perhaps he does. But so do we. Most of those front runners are using $30-40K cars, $7K engines, new shaved race rubber every race, perfectly balanced cars, etc. Just because they are supposed to be "spec", there is a BIG difference between a $4K Miata and a $40K Miata. There are a couple of things I know for sure. We are absolutely maximizing the speed out of our cars, but there will always be someone with a bigger stick!

Congratulations Bruce...well done!!

..."do what you can with what you got"...the guys down here definitely do that in spades !!!

Everyone I talk with in the racing community, outside of Atlantic Canada, thinks there must be something
in our water supply to turn out such talent from such a small pool of people.

Keep up the great work!!

... "just" a fan of the sport.

Hmmm...I trust that you went over that Cup car with a fine tooth comb and took a copy of the engineers note book and maybe even a few measurements were jotted down....just for "safety reason" I'm sure!!

Looks like a nice ride on the 2 wheel bimmer...they got some nice roads so I hear. 8)

Not much guesswork. Cup cars are pretty much showroom stock, except for exhaust, suspension & air intake. They are totally spec including the rollcage.

great experience. The rental guys & shop were first class. That bike was interesting. I always wanted to try the GS and see what all the fuss was about. Decent torque. Electronic gauges/info system was nice. If I had the opportunity to blast across the desert, this bike is for that. I hated the turn signal switches. Very awkward compared to my Honda. I guess I'm so used to superbike power now, I cant change on this one. I really like my CBF1000A...

BTW, that shop had about 100 bikes to rent. Anything from a Road King to a Goldwing to a scooter.

yeah, 3 separate switches. L, R, & cancel. My Honda is a much better design with only 1 switch. It drove me nuts...
