Hello all,

With the real racing season over for the year (except for those mud & snow guys) it's time to startup GT5 again with the "There's no return from 86" Series

Image

Car Restrictions
Toyota 86 GT '12
http://www.mygranturismo.net/car_sheet.php?id=1081

Scion FR-S '12
http://www.mygranturismo.net/car_sheet.php?id=1090

Subaru BR-Z S ’12
http://www.mygranturismo.net/car_sheet.php?id=1104

(All cars are DLC, but I believe one maybe free and the others are 99 cents)
86 CONCEPT CARS NOT PERMITTED (FT-86 Concept '09 / FT-86 G SPORTS Concept '10 / FT-86 Concept '11)

Tuning Restrictions:
-All mods and upgraded permitted

Tire Restrctions:
-Any SPORTS tire (Hard/Medium/Soft)
-Top 3 competitors in the points must start the race on MEDIUM tires

Event Settings:
-Grid Start with False Start Check
-Grid Order: Fastest First
-Visible Damage: OFF
-Penalty: None
-Race Finish Delay: 180 Seconds
-Mechanical Damage: HEAVY
-Slipstream Strength: Low
-Tire Wear / Fuel Consumption: On
-Grip Reduction on Wet Track / Track Edge: Real
-No ASM
-No Skid Recovery Force
-No Active Steering

PLEASE NOTE
Damage will be set to HEAVY, meaning if you take damage you will need to PIT to repair it.
Visible Damage will also be set to ON

Red Flag procedure
-When the person rejoins the room the current time index & lap # will be taken.
-No passing is to occur and all cars are to proceed to the front straight but behind the start/finish line.
-In current order, cars will pass the start/finish line to see if any cars are 1 lap behind the leader or more.
-Car order and laps down will be noted for the restart.
-The car that dropped will be placed behind the last place car. (Call this mechanical difficulties).
-The time index or lap count taken will be used to calculate the remaining time/laps of the race.
-Laps maybe added to the remain laps to allow for the lead cars to "relap" the lapped cars.
-The race will be restarted, however the first lap(s) will be used to get the cars into proper order and laps down if needed.
-Once any lapped cars have been "relapped" the first place car will lead as a "pace car" for 1 lap. No cars may change positions until after crossing the start/finish when the race condition is again green.

Point structure for the GT5 86 Championship:

1st 25
2nd 18
3rd 15
4th 12
5th 10
6th 8
7th 6
8th 4
9th 2
10th 1
11th 1
12th 1
13th 1
14th 1
15th 1
16th 1

-The series will be contested over 8 races and your worst 2 results will be dropped when calculating final results.

Bluetooth Headsets Strongly Recommended!
I can't stress that enough! Any Bluetooth headset will work, just make sure to pair it with your PS3. Futureshop has a good selection as well.

Tuned the car on the Nordschleife this evening and then took it to the Top Gear Test Track for some laps.

Most laps were 1:16.6 ~ 1:17.0
Best was a 1:16.3

This was no pylons down, and no corner cutting (staying out of the candycane stripes at all times, etc)

If you want to compare lap times DO NOT USE PRACTICE MODE, the physics are different!

Instead go ONLINE into any LOUNGE and use the following settings:
-Tire Wear / Fuel Consumption: On
-Grip Reduction on Wet Track / Track Edge: Real

How's everyone else doing? :jump:

For what it's worth, according to the Top Gear Test Track Power Board, it's quicker than a Lamborghini Aventador. 8)
So maybe the test tonight is to take a stock Lamborghini Aventador with the same tires and try a lap.... hrm

The Power Board Top 10
1:15.1 – Ariel Atom 500
1:16.2 – McLaren MP4-12C
1:16.5 – Lamborghini Aventador
1:16.8 – Bugatti Veyron Super Sport
1:17.1 – Gumpert Apollo S
1:17.3 – Ascari A10
1:17.6 – Koenigsegg CCX (with Top Gear Wing)
1:17.7 – Noble M600 (cold)
1:17.8 – Nissan GT-R (2012)
1:17.8 – Pagani Zonda Roadster F

I did most of my setup on Deep Forest, I'll have to take it to some of those smoother tracks and compare my times.

Just so it's posted here too, I'm in an orange FR-S with red wheels.

Just finished setting it up and noodled around on the Top Gear track. Best time was 1:16.42 which I'm happy with :)

We'll have to see how close our cars look alike, I may change the color of my wheels just in case.

Best I could get on the Top Gear track was a few 1:16.9's. And Jason, if I'm not mistaken, all the Top Gear times are standing start, I don't think you'd be close with starting from a dead stop! Unless you are, and I'm WAY off with my setup!!

I am having a hellva time setting my tune(suspension) anyone got a good tune(specs) they could send me for a baseline. I am not the greatest with setting the tunes. I have the car maxed out for power its just my handling is garbage. I tried 2 tunes from the web lastnight but they were more like a drift tune
cheers

You're WAY off..... j/k
But, yea I forgot it's a standing start (I'm suffering from Top Gear withdrawal).

Anyone else have any TGTT times they'd care to post?

If anyone sees me on the PSN:GT5 this weekend I'm probably in my lounge doing tests, just FYI.

I found the spring rates way off when I installed the racing suspension. Made the car way to tail happy, and it wouldn't accelerate out of the corner, just wanted to spin. I dropped the front spring rate, and increased the rear, added a bit more sway bar and camber, and set some toe out in the front. I set mine up quite a bit different than most people I've seen, but I can now go full power out of the turn. I don't have my exact numbers, but it gives you something to start with.

I also find the car likes the brakes set even F/R and I have set them at 3 if I remember correctly. That being said, the only way you are going to get the car good for your driving style is to mess around with it yourself. Try to catch Jason Smith online and practice with him, he's always a front runner and hard to beat, he'll have some good tips for you.

I apply a lot of real world setup tricks I've learned in real life to the cars in GT5.

If you haven't read any of the Carroll Smith books I highly recommend them. I always keep his "Engineer in your Pocket" close to my GT5 seat so I can reference it, if needed. One thing I love about it, is that it's separated into problem/solution and cause/effect sections for quick and easy reference. https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/produ ... ?RecID=163

Normally I can spend about 5mins "quick tuning" a car and be able to run at the front with it, however the 86s proved to be more difficult. It took me about a 1/2hr of tuning on the Nordschleife to get the car to something I'm 95% happy with, it still needs a little tweaking but that can be done over the course of the 8 races.

One good test I found was if I could take Fuchsröhre flat out, and if the car became unbalanced at dip before you climb the hill towards Adenauer Forst.

Blanchard is right when he said you need to soften the front and stiffen the rear and adjust toe and swaybar settings. (At least that's what I did)

I hate to give away all my GT5 tuning secrets but one thing I do is test & tune with harder tires than I plan to race with. That said my 1:16.3 on the TGTT was set on Sports Medium tires (not Sports Soft... I'll save those for the racing :) )

I do this because I feel the sticker tires can hide some of the faults in a car setup. By using harder compounds it allows me to adjust and tune for less grip (IE rain, worn tires, etc) So when I have stickier tires I'll be able to push the car hard, go further on the tires and have the confidence in the car to go even quicker, at least that's the theory.

But again car setup is an art form, some people like a loose rear end, others like a tight one. So the trick is to set the car up for your driving style to give you confidence in the car. If you don't have confidence in the car you won't be able to turn consistently quick laps.

I don't know about GT5, but in real life the amount of grip your tires produce can have a big impact on suspension tuning. More grip means more body roll, which means you need more spring and/or roll-bar. And it could also mean larger camber curves which need more static negative camber....

You could be giving up performance by tuning with harder tires than you plan to race with. Depends on how accurate the game's physics model is.

The difference in grip between one "grip level" of tires in GT5 is negligible, maybe 5%.
http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=160821

Also with GT5 physics I've never had a car tuned on a lower grip tire that didn't perform better when the grip level increased.

We aren't taking about a certain Talon with steamroller tires after all.

BTW, where's your TGTT time Scott :?:

Bedtime. Best was a 1:45.9 at Fuiji on Sports Softs.
Could only get down to a 1:47.2 on mediums. :(
