We're keeping an eye on things and will make the call no later than Friday. At last report AMP was really soft and we're just not looking to get the deep freeze that would resolve that. If we continue to get rain or melted snow it will be pretty brutal.

Its just not AMPs season for rallycross.

Okay folks, AMP isn't usable. Dave Hull visited yesterday and the ground is just too soft. Meanwhile I visited Scotia Speed World and the large lot is in really rough shape after our last event, so unfortunately it is unusable as well and will remain so until we get a thaw enough to do some levelling.

We have changed the venue of Sunday's event to the Scotia Speed World small lot. HOWEVER, we are currently forcast for 30% chance of rain on Friday and 60% chance of rain on Sunday. If either or both of these forcasts are likely we probably won't be able to run Sunday. We don't want to ruin the last lot we have for the remainder of the season. I'll hopefully be able to do a site visit on Friday and update on the conditions and give a go/no-go Friday evening. Stay tuned!

Hey Gord, why are these lots "unusable"? Isn't this Rallycross?

Yes and no, AMP is too soft and we'll wreck it if we use it that way. We wrecked Scotia's big lot two weeks ago because we ran when it was too wet, there's big 6-8" deep ruts around a good portion of the lot which is now frozen and we're not out to break cars, which is exactly what will happen. That leaves us the small lot at Scotia which is usable now, but if its wet again will end up in exactly the situation as the big lot, leaving us with no lots to run.

It sucks, but we're not all running Speedline reinforce rally wheels, reinforced sidewall rally tires and DMS50s. We don't want to wreck lots and/or cars.

Bear in mind these are iced in and the ice isn't thick enough to hold up, it breaks when you drive over it. These ruts are 6"+ deep and the ground is pretty frozen. Even driving at creeping speeds the ice threw me sidways and stopped me hard when I hit the ridges.

Sounds like you should be using Steve's sand & gravel pit out in Wittenburg. I'm sure you could make a cool course throughout his pit.

We definitely need to investigate some new properties, for sure.

My preference would be to race on Sunday. If it ends up being soft enough to rut up the small lot, it will also be soft enough to fix up the big lot for the next event.

We could probably organize some folks to work on the big lot between runs.

The problem with the forcast for this weekend isn't the soft, its the wet. We can run if its soft and dry, we've done that lots of times before and we can drag it back to relatively smooth when we're done. When its soft and wet we don't have the hardware required to drag it. Ian's jeep won't particularly like hauling our makeshift grader along with 1500lbs of wet gravel and mud. :)

Regardless of how, when we do it, or if it is bundled in to an event, it does sound like a good idea to get a work party together to repair the big lot at SSW when the weather cooperates. I'd hate to see it taken off of the roster for the rest of the season. If we can incorporate that in to the same day as one of our events, even better. I'm happy to help with some grunt work and I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

Yeah, even if Sunday is cancelled (Final call will be this evening) we may look at heading out and seeing if there's anything that can be done with the big lot. If it stays like it is now we're not going back there in February or possibly even March.

There is a fair bit of work to be done on the big lot.

I would love to think that we would could do it all on a competition day, but there is a fair bit to simply running the event that needs hands to do as well.

I think Matt's idea of a work party day is the best one. A nice soft warm day, many hands and some rakes/pick's/shovels.

We made a bit of an error in my estimation, and we should not have run the last event. Just how soft the base was last time was not known until we got going. Live and learn.

If it's gets soft, then we need someone with a larger vehicle that has the power to move our drag around the surface and smooth it out some. That, or 20 people with tools would work as well. I have work boots and a shovel, do we have others in the same boat? I'll even bring a thermos of coffee. :)

Nobody wants to see a strut through a hood, and given the surface that is there, it's an outcome that could occur.

I'd love to run, but I'm with Gord, I don't want to see our last remaining surface used up for one event, thus preventing 3 events from happening the rest of the winter.

I must have posted when you did Gord:

I'll volunteer to head out on Sunday if the event does not run, just to see if we can do anything.

Okay folks, here's the story. Forecast for tonight is 60% chance of Rain, 0 degrees tomorrow and 6 degrees and early morning rain on Sunday. Thats going to make for a soft lot and I'm just not comfortable that we won't wreck the small lot and not be able to fix it if we run.

I don't want to cancel another event, but I think at this point its more important to try and save the rest of our season, so to that end we're going to have a work party on Sunday in the Scotia big lot to try and fix up what we did so we can run there on the 16th. I think everyone agrees we'd much rather be in the large lot than the small one anyway.

So calling all able bodied rallycrossers to come out to Scotia on Sunday at 10:30 or so. Bring boots, gloves and shovels/rakes/hoes. If we can pull things down and even them out mechanically we will but we may be resorting to good 'ol manpower to fix the worst of it.

Ahh Global Warming. Remember when we were all ice racing it Wittenberg this time of year? (Okay, so I don't, but I understand that's what people did! :) )

Ian and I are going to drop by the lot tomorrow morning so we know what to expect. We'll post pictures and let folks know.

Well, another change of plans. Ian Pearce and I visited the site this morning and there's absolutely no point in having a work party tomorrow. The entire lot is still covered in snow and even with the warmer temperatures its unlikely to thaw enough to be movable, plus with the snow its hard to find the spots that need to be worked on anyway.

Image

The Small lot is flatter, but people have been in there as well and its covered in ~2" ice that breaks apart just walking on it. Its sharded up in such a way that its very possible for it to wreck tires and cause other mayhem.

50% of the lot is covered in this: Image

Both lots are pretty much guaranteed to break cars at the moment unfortunately.

There's really nothing we can do tomorrow so consider the event 100% cancelled at this time. Stay tuned for the next event on February 16th!
