Hi guys,

I'm STRONGLY considering giving lapping at AMP a try this year. Aside from the basics (vehicle in safe running condition, helmet, etc.) is there anything more specific I should be looking at for my AE86 Corolla?

I currently have Hawk HPS pads that I use on the street and at slalom events, but I have a feeling they wouldn't last at AMP. Not sure what direction to go with brake fluid either.

The car only weights in around the 2200 lbs mark, with somewhere around 120-130 hp on tap. Tires are older (~3 years) Falken RT-615K's.

Would my current street setup be OK for the track portion of the school? And then eventually, if I wanted to do Time Attack, maybe I'd have to look at upgrading...?

Thanks!

I think you pretty much have it covered. I would consider changing out the brake fluid for some high temp especially if you haven't done that recently. Braided lines would help also. The HPS pads MAY be OK for that car at only 2200 lbs. I use HP+ for the Mustang and they are ok for occasional track use.

As long as everything else is tight and safe, tires and brakes are the most important.

I'd just flush your brake fluid with some cheap Ford Heavy Duty 550ยบ stuff, and hit the HPDS. If you find the Hawk HPS pads start to fade later in the day, then order some Hawk HP Plus pads for next time. That should be all you'll need for a such a light weight lower power car.

I'm no expert here but maybe this will give you a point of reference: I started lapping last summer with an 04 Hyundai Accent (104 hp when new, about the same weight). Bone stock including the 13" high wear energy saving tires, that protested loudly at every corner, and OEM brake pads/rotors. I got very good at looking in my mirrors and waving cars past. It was a blast though. I didn't do any time attacks but was told there was no reason I couldn't. I expect you'll be ok. :)

Things I upgraded before the end of the summer included ceramic pads (nothing fancy but they grabbed better and did last twice as long as the OEM pads) and ATE blue brake fluid (probably overkill but it needed to be changed anyway). Would like to get the Hawk HP+ for it but they don't make them for my car. Maybe some EBC redstuff (again no EBC yellowstuff available). Have a set of 15" Star specs for this summer, which should be similar to the 615ks, and plan to do at least a couple time attacks in addition to the lapping days. But other than that it'll still be stock. I look forward to seeing you drive past.

Have a look at CASC-OR's online database for car classing before doing a time attack. It's a good idea to look at what a potential mod will do for your car class before doing it (for example going to full race tire could bump you up a class).

HPS would definitely be fine for one school. I did the ASCC school in my 328is (~2900lb) with OE pads (worse than HPS) and didn't have any fade issues. All I did for prep was a fluid flush and check tire pressure.

If you do get into time attack, I'd consider having a second set of aggressive pads (and maybe rotors) to swap on before events. Not sure what the ae86 caliper setup is, but on mine I can do a pad change in about an hour. Track pads are pretty noisy on the street.

I think I am going to source a spare set of pads anyway. A fluid flush will be done for sure.

Also think I'm going to splurge for some real race rubber for the first time this year. Probably going to get something that will be dual purpose for slalom and track days. R888, RA1, or NT-01's most likely. I know they won't be the stickiest for slalom, but they'll be waaay better than my almost-done-for Falken RT-615K's.

I'm looking for a set in 205/55/14 if anyone has some decent ones... 8)

What about safety? Is an ABC fire extinguisher required for the school? Lapping? Time attack?

Mike. I would get some NT01's if you can source them. Awesome for slalom and track days.

Yeah I've been looking into them... Discount Tire Direct seems to have the best price on the Nittos. $736 for a set shipped to my door.

I don't know where to try locally for them...

I think Joel found that he can source them at 1010 Tires.

Also, the R888's may work well on your car where it is so light. Any reviews for heavier cars I saw said they didn't do well.

Discount tire direct can definitely ship to Canada. The $736 price I got includes shipping, taxes and duty fees. 1010 tires has them but they'll cost me $914 after tax and shipping.

Sad that you can add $150+ of duty on a set of tires and still get them significantly cheaper than retail in Canada.

Yes, you can price them with shipping and all on the DTD site, but when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, they cannot ship THESE tires to Canada as they are restricted by their dealership agreement. That's why I had to go to Calais to pick them up last year! You should call them to confirm this of course, that's what I did last year.

1010 has my size on for about $320 shipping included, DTD has them for $263 IF they were allowed to ship to Canada.

I understand now. What a crappy deal! I just read a lengthy thread on the problems with ordering nittos from the states. That's almost enough to make me want to look at something totally different for a tire.

From what I saw on my school, a completely stock car would do perfectly fine
When it comes to serious lapping it's a little different because you're really pushing your car

Just a heads up, last time I had tried to buy Nittos through Discount Tire, they did have NA shipping but couldn't cross the border with Nittos. I went with Hankooks instead.

Yeah I con't do the BFG Rivals or the Hankook's because they don't offer a 14" size.

New wheels really aren't in the budget this year. Whereas I have 3 or 4 sets of 14" rims with varying offsets to play with.

I just got a quote back from them on some Hawk pads. Their prices are $10-$15 a set cheaper than the cheapest websites I've found online (USA or Canada). Very reasonable shipping cost too. $15 vs $65 from some shops in the states.

I decided to upgrade my wheels to a set of 15X7" zero offset Konig Rewinds. Cheap wheels, but now I have a wider selection of tires to choose from. I'm going to try the BFG Rivals this year.

Probably going to sell my 14X7 -9 offset Konig Rewinds to try and offset cost. :)

What kind of safety gear is required if I don't have a roll cage?

An approved helmet and good old common sense to tone down the adrenaline rush.
