Benefits of Registering

There are a fair number of unregistered guest users who frequent this discussion forum. Although you may not have to register to read the various postings, registration will give you access to additional features not available to guest users, such as definable avatar images, private messaging, emailing of fellow users, usergroup subscription, etc. It only takes a few moments to register so it is recommended you do so.

By registering you will benefit from the following features:

    - Ability to post new topics and / or reply to topics.
    - Ability to edit or delete your posts.
    - Ability to vote in polls in the forum.
    - Ability to send private messages to other registered users
    - Ability to subscribe to ARMS clubs usergroups, which will give you access to your club’s private discussion forum (Note: clubs’ private forums are not visible until you are subscribed).
    - Ability to flag topics to watch (i.e. have an email sent to you whenever someone posts in a specific topic)
    - Ability to determine which topics contain new posts since your last visit. Topics containing new posts will have a highlighted folder icon Image next to it, while previously read topics will have the regular folder icon Image.

As you can see, there are a number of valuable features available to registered users. Even if you never intend to post anything on the discussion form, just the “new posts” highlighted folder icons are worth registering for. It makes searching for new posts a lot more convenient.

So what are you waiting for… register now!

View Latest Post

Here's an interesting feature that is not completely obvious... the "View Latest Post" icon.

While looking at any of the forum indexes you see a "Last Post" column with information about the last post that of that forum. Next to the poster's name, you will see a little "Image" icon. If you move your mouse pointer over this icon and click on it, it will automatically take you to the latest post of that forum. This is especially nice when a topic contains many posts over a number of pages. Using the "View Latest Post" Image icon will take you directly to the latest post without having to navigate through the discussion board.

Give it a try! :D

Private Messages

Not only do registered users have the ability to post messages on this discussion board, but also to send private messages. These messages can only be viewed by the recipient, and use the same format as a regular discussion board post.

There are a couple ways you can send a private message. One is to look up the recipient’s name in the Memberlist. From the Memberlist, click on the private message Image icon next to the person’s name. Or you can click on the same private message Image icon found within each post of the discussion board. (For example, you’ll see a private message icon for the "MDSM Webmaster" at the bottom of this message).

Depending on the recipient’s profile settings, he/she may receive an email notification immediately upon receipt of your new private message, and he/she may be greeted with a discussion board pop-up window informing that a new private message has arrived.

Just one of the many great features available to registered users of this discussion board.

Discussion Forum Username Policy

On the ARMS Discussion Forum, we have a policy regarding registered Usernames. We ask that all members use their first & last names instead of a nickname. This will allow everyone to recognize each other by name, and also make everyone more accountable for the content of their posts. Those that are adamant about keeping their nickname can simply add it to their Signature as many others have done. Changing your Username and/or Signature can be accomplished by clicking on the Profile link at the top of this page. As always, if you have any difficulties please feel free to ask for assistance.

Avatar Gallery

This discussion forum has many interesting and useful features. One such feature is the "Avatar". The Avatar is something that you can set up in your user Profile (see links at the top of the page) that allows you to display an 80x80 pixel image next to each of your posts. It's a nice way to personalize your messages and display your favourite logo or car picture.

We have set up a gallery of Avatars for you to choose from via the "Show Gallery" button at the bottom of the Profile page. Simply choose one of the categories of Avatar, then click the button next to the image you want to appear next to your messages.

Here are several sample Avatars you will find in the gallery:

Enjoy.

<center>Ranks</center>
Ranks appear below your username in topics and on your profile. They appears as little blue circles such as this... Image. Most boards use ranks to indicate the number of posts you have made and to identify certain users, e.g. moderators and administrators may have a special rank. Below is a table listing the ranks of this Discussion Forum:

<table cellspacing="1" cellpadding="4" border="0" align="center" class="forumline"><tr><td class="row3">Rank Title</td><td class="row3">Minimum Posts</td><td class="row3">Nbr of Circles</td><td class="row3">Set as Special Rank</td></tr><tr><td class="row1" align="center">Site Administrator</td><td class="row1" align="center">-</td><td class="row2" align="center">Image</td><td class="row1" align="center">Yes</td></tr><tr><td class="row2" align="center">Moderator</td><td class="row2" align="center">-</td><td class="row2" align="center">Image</td><td class="row2" align="center">Yes</td></tr><tr><td class="row1" align="center">New Member</td><td class="row1" align="center">0</td><td class="row2" align="center">Image</td><td class="row1" align="center">No</td></tr><tr><td class="row2" align="center">Regular Member</td><td class="row2" align="center">25</td><td class="row2" align="center">Image</td><td class="row2" align="center">No</td></tr><tr><td class="row1" align="center">Regular Member</td><td class="row1" align="center">100</td><td class="row2" align="center">Image</td><td class="row1" align="center">No</td></tr><tr><td class="row2" align="center">Regular Member</td><td class="row2" align="center">500</td><td class="row2" align="center">Image</td><td class="row2" align="center">No</td><tr><td class="row1" align="center">Senior Member</td><td class="row1" align="center">1000</td><td class="row2" align="center">Image</td><td class="row1" align="center">No</td></table>
So now you know what all of those little blue circles represent.

<center>Usergroups / Private Forums</center>
Each ARMS member club now has it's own private forum on this discussion board. These private forums are only visible to registered users who are subscribed to their club's usergroup.

How do I join my club's usergroup? :mconfused:

To join a usergroup click the usergroup link on the page header, you can then view all available club usergroups. Then you can request to join one by clicking the appropriate button. The club's moderator will need to verify that you are a member of that club, and then approve your request. Once your request has been approved, you will then have access to your club's private forum.

So if you are a member of AFRA, ASCC, BAC, MMSC, or NBSCC, I encourage you to click the Image Usergroups link at the top of this page and select your club from the usergroup selection list.

Join today!

<center>New Post Indicators</center>
This discussion forum has a very helpful feature for registered users... the new post indicators!

When logged in, any forums that contain new posts since your last visit will have a highlighted folder icon Image next to it, while previously read forums will have the regular folder icon Image. Likewise any topics (found within a forum) containing new posts will have a highlighted folder icon Image next to it. And once inside a specific topic, all new posts will display a highlighted post icon Image, so you can easily see what has been posted since your last visit. :)

Note that in order for you to take advantage of there various new post indicators, you must be logged on to the discussion board. Too much of a hassle log on each and every time, you say? There's a solution... The next time you log on to this Discussion Forum, try checking the little check-box that reads: "Log me on automatically each visit:". From that point onward, whenever you visit the Discussion Forum (from that computer) you will automatically be logged on and all new posts (since your last visit) will be flagged with the new post indicators. 8)

These new post indicators even work when visiting the site from different computers. I.e. If you had previously visited the discussion forum from work, then visit it again from home, only the new posts since your last visit will be flagged, despite you visiting the site from different computers. It's great!

So for the registered users who never log on to the discussion forum while reading it, you're missing out on one the forums most useful features. Check that "Log me on automatically each visit:" box and you'll be much happier for doing it. Image

<center>Watch Topics</center>
While visiting the Discussion Forum, you come across a topic that really sparks your interest. You are anxious to read members' replies, but don't have the time to check the Discussion Forum every five minutes. What do you do? :?:

Simple... you click on the "Watch this topic for replies" link at the bottom of the page. From that point onward, you will receive an email notification each time someone posts a message within that specific topic.

If you later decided that you no longer wish to watch that topic, simply click on the "Stop watching this topic" link found at the same location at bottom of the page. This will disable the feature.

Give it a try!

Images can be shown in your posts. However, there is no facility at present for uploading images directly to this board. Therefore you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g. http://www.some-unknown-place.net/my-picture.gif. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor images stored behind authentication mechanisms, e.g. hotmail or yahoo mailboxes, password protected sites, etc. To display the image use either the BBCode [img] tag or appropriate HTML.

<center>View posts since last visit</center>
Another useful feature of this forum is the View posts since last visit link. This link can be found in the top section of the main forum index . When you select this link, only new posts since your last visit will be displayed. And it actually displays the individual topics of the new posts, so you need not navigate through the forum to find them.

I have found it very useful to bookmark the View posts since last visit link in my browser. Then whenever I visit the forum to see what's new, only those topics containing new posts are displayed to me. Give it a try, it works great!

<center>ASCC Notification Service</center>

Here's something that you may not be aware of... The Atlantic Sports Car Club (ASCC) has an automated message service which anyone can register for. This service will send you email notifications whenever an addition / update is made to the ARMS event schedule, such as new events, date changes, supplemental regulations, event results, etc.

Here is a sample of notification message:

Quote:
<center><table cellSpacing="0" cellPadding="0" width="100%" border="0"><tbody><tr><td><img alt="Atlantic Sports Car Club" src="http://ascc.ns.ca/images/email_01.gif" width="313" height="89"></td><td align="right"><img alt="Atlantic Sports Car Club" src="http://ascc.ns.ca/images/email_01-2.gif" width="96" height="89"></td></tr><tr><td vAlign="top" colSpan="2"><font face="Arial"><br>The rally schedule has been added/updated for the BAC organized <b>2003-05-31 Bluenose Car Rally</b> event. This event is scheduled be held at Vantage Motors, Truro, N.S. .<br><br>To view the details of this event visit the club website at <a href="http://ascc.ns.ca">http://ascc.ns.ca</a>.<br><br>Thank you for using this service.<br><br><hr>This is an automated message service, to be removed from these notifications visit the club website at http://ascc.ns.ca and unselect the schedule update notification for <b>rally</b> events. If your information does not appear when you visit the site, login again using your personal email/password.</font><small><br></small></td></tr><tr><td align="right" colSpan="2"><img alt src="http://ascc.ns.ca/images/email_03.gif" width="480" height="46"></td></tr></tbody></table></center>

This notification service is completely configurable. You can specify whether you want to receive notifications for the whole region, or just your local club. And you can pick & choose which motorsport disciplines you wish to receive notifications for.

Signing up is simple. Just visit the ASCC website at http://ascc.ns.ca , register an account, and select the schedule update notification options.

Special thanks to ASCC for making this service available to the region.

<center>Cross-posting</center>

We’ve received some complaints about people cross-posting (i.e. posting the same message simultaneously to multiple sections of this forum). This action is generally considered a serious breach of netiquette.

This is a request that you not cross-post on this forum. If you have an announcement to make, please use the Announcements section. If you have a general question or request, please use the or ARMS Chat or General Discussion section.

Please note that future cross-posts may be moved / deleted as deemed appropriate by the site admins.

Thanks,

-Scott

<center>Session Timeout</center>

For security reasons, this forum has a session timeout period. Your login session will timeout if you don't refresh the page within 30 minutes So if you spend more than 30 minutes typing / editing your message before clicking the "Submit" or "Preview" button, the forum will dump your message. This is because only registered users are allowed to post (and you're no longer logged on).

So how can you avoid this from happening? Well, you can hit the "Preview" button every once in a while to prevent your session from timing out. Or you can compose your message in a word processor then copy & paste it into the forum. Then you'd still have a copy of it should the board eat it.
