ARMS iRacing League: Week 02 - AFRA F2000 Series @ Sebring - Modified

    Image

Welcome to the first week of the new AFRA F2000 Series!

The Atlantic Formula Racing Association (AFRA) has generously offered to award a prize to the overall series champion. The prize will take the form of a FREE AFRA Lapping Day or 50% off Lapping School (in 2013) at Atlantic Motorsport Park, providing the winner meets the requirements to enter such an event.

This week the series visits Sebring International Raceway. Two 30-minute races will be held this Friday evening, February 08. Here's is the time schedule:

    F2000 Evening Schedule

    Session Type
    Start Time
    End Time
    Duration
    Practice7:10 PM8:30 PM80 Min.
    Qualify8:30 PM8:40 PM10 Min.
    Race8:40 PM9:10 PM30 min.
    Practice8:40 PM9:30 PM50 Min.

Currently the WR lap is a 1:19.278. Although here's a recent 1:18.690 hot lap, presumably from a test session:

Keep in mind that our AFRA F2000 Series follows the official iRacing Skip Barber Race Series tracks, so there will be practice sessions up all week to help prepare for our league races. 8)

The iRacing scan of that track is so precise it has the tree and sand patch where Walter Tennant parks his Motorhome 8O

I'm surprised it doesn't show the fire ants that are everywhere too...

BTW anybody got a nice forgiving setup they can send me?

Thanks
Stacy

To everyone who's thinking of skipping the Skippy, don't. This particular configuration of Sebring is quite simple and easy to navigate in the Skip as long as you don't drive like a fool. There are only two corners which really run the potential of causing you to spin, and there so much empty space that the chances of you hitting a wall are pretty minimal.

Give it a try, this is a good intro course to get us back in to this unique car.

Stacy, I was running the baseline, and as long as you don't crank the wheel too hard when turning, you'll survive just fine.

I ran about 20 minutes of practice tonight, and have to agree with Ryan. This is a great track for the Skippy! My only trouble areas are T1 and T2, but that's because I'm over-driving, thinking I'm going too slow. My best lap was a 1:20.6xx. With some more practice, 1:19's should be easy.

Someone running in the 1:18's in the same session shared his setup. I'll attach it to this post (have to zip it as the forum does not accept .sto files). I found the setup to be quite stable and controllable.

I ran a couple Skip Barber Race Series races last night. It's been so long since I ran in a D-class official series that I forgot how unsafe the lower licensed drive. Got taken out in both races. :x

It's partly my own fault for not taking the time to qualify better so that I'd start higher up the grid.

The races had quite the range of skill levels. The field consisted of low 1000's iR all the way up to 7000+ iR in the same race. One race even had a PRO/WC driver in it.

Best lap time I've managed so far is a 1:19.643, Although the WR time has dropped to a 1:17.886. 8O

You looked good to me!

I was ghosting you last night trying to learn the track ...well, I kept up to you for one or two turns then spun out and crashed over and over

Of course here is my take on that:

I ran two more races last night.

First one I started from the pits despite being P3 on the gird. I wanted to avoid the first lap mayhem and just have a clean race, which I did. Cars were flying off the track in front of me left & right as I safely worked my way up to finishing 3rd place with zero incidents. Success!

Feeling confident again, I decided to start my second race from the grid. I was in P3 again, and the cars behind me were a fair bit slower, at least in qualifying times. So it should have been an easy podium...

Well on lap 1 the car in front of me got a little crossed up and I had to slow to avoid him. That put the P4 & P5 cars right on my tailpipe. P4 got a run on me on the back straight and pulled up along side going into T-last, but I was successfully defending the inside line to prevent the pass. Then P5 braked way too late and rams me from behind in the braking zone. A second later, P4 rams me from behind as well. At this point my car is damaged and I'm trying to hold it together as the three of us enter the front straight, but my car now has a mind of its own. It self-swerves into the path of P4, made contact again, and sent him flying over the wall and me spinning into the path of the whole field behind us.

So of the four official Skip Barber races I've run this week, there was only one in which I wasn't taken out by another driver. And to accomplish this one clean race, I had to start from pit lane.

That's it for me this week. No more official series races in the Skippy. My iRating & Saftey Rating cannot take it anymore. But at least I've got lots of seat time in for tonight league race. :D

See you all tonight!

Congrats to Weatherbee for winning both F2000 races! He didn't have the fastest car of the night, but he made up for it with consistency.

The 5 people who didn't disconnect from the first race and 3 from the second race, these numbers do not support the pole that was taken before the season started. If 7 people voted for the crap can Skippy, where are they?

Good question! The first race had a decent turnout, at least until half the field rage quit.

Only half of us returned for the second race, which lead to a somewhat boring race once the field spread out.

We'll give it another week. If things remain the same, I'll consider switching the series to less challenging car. Racing in a field of 3 is no fun.

Wouldn't have mattered what car was racing as I simply couldn't make the race on Friday. "crap can"? Someone once told me it wasn't the car, "you just have to treat it right".

Scott, if possible, maybe in the future make the polls show who voted for what. That might curb "outside" influences. :orgshifty:

Not possible on this forum, unfortunately.

Maybe next time it could be private email ballot, or the individual who is paying the hosting fees could choose a car / series.

I thought that a democratic vote would ensure maximum participation (keep the most people happy) but it may not be the case.

You're asking the right questions and agree with the approach. Just have to be a little careful about who you are getting answers from. :)

Well, there were only 15 votes in the poll and each person could vote for two options. So that means only 8 - 15 people voted. The league has 17 participants (21 members), so even if people outside the league voted in the pole, it should not have influenced the results much / if at all. I'm pretty confident that the majority of the league members who voted wanted the Skippy (or at least voted for it). Perhaps some didn't know what they were getting into. ;)

All I know is I took a dictatorial approach with my series, and everyone loves it!

Just sayin'

Well, the numbers of those "who remained racing" vs. "who voted for the car" ...is even more skewed as I didn't vote :|

You mean if I had of voted you wouldn't know it was me? Because I figured you would have been able to figure it out somehow. Oh well I didn't but did think of it. I am thinking of getting In on the iracing, it looks so fun. plus Bruce McNutt has a hardtop for a Miata for sale for one. Good deals!!!

You should Brian, its great times. Good news is, iRacing uses the newer model Spec Miatas, so we don't need any of his old hardtops!
