#26 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 RM '69 - Dark Metallic Blue

In my testing I fully upgraded both cars (except I didn't so Engine Stage 3 on the Dodge).

The Chevy tops out at just over 600pp while the Dodge is much higher (around 650pp I believe).

I used 200kg to the Dodge (which is the max ballast) and reduced the rear aero to 25), then I reduced the engine power. It still has way more than 100hp and torque over the Chevy, but is nearly 400kg heavier.... and you can feel it.

I tested two tracks, the TGTT and the HSR.
I figured the Chevy would be quickest on the TGTT and slower on the HSR but actually it was reversed. Both times after doing 5 laps with each car on each track were within 0.2 seconds. The Dodge was faster on the TGTT but the Chevy was quicker on HSR.... not what I was expecting.

I will say the higher HP and TRQ and weight of the Dodge makes it a real handful, while the Chevy was pretty easy to control. In the right hands and if you could learn the "tame the beast" I think the Dodge will be quicker.

Both were used with the default suspension setups. Tweaking will make them faster, but not by much. The default settings on both cars felt good.

I'm going to do some testing over the next couple of days, but I'm pretty sure I'll be going with the Camaro. I have 2 of them, and seeing as how there is a pile of blue ones, I'll go with the same scheme as the Lotus.

Black car, red rims, # 13.

If I could change the decals on the cars, I'd be running the 69 Penske Sunoco #6 car, my all time favorite race car. One hell of a history of cheating, dominating and never getting caught haha. Not really the place to ramble on about the history of that racing team here, but I highly recommend anyone to look it up!!

I couldn't figure out why you can RM the Challenger and the Camaro but not the Mustang. Love the game, but it's way to easy to tell that it is not based towards a North American audience.

x2

You can't RM the Mustang, but if you'd like to run it feel free.
Can it be brought to 600pp?

I was playing with it earlier, and you have to take some power out of it to hit the 600, or run weight. It's a heavy old girl, but at 600 here is the specs I have it at;
714hp @ 5400rpm
808ft-lb @ 4400rpm
1465kg
2.02kg/hp

I can run similar times with it at Daytona Road Course, but it is a REAL handful with a controller, on the other hand I have the Camaro at the point where I used it to get gold in the drift tournaments on comfort soft tires, it's that controllable. If you are allowing any american muscle car that will hit 600pp, there are others, but IMO anyone who runs anything other than the Dodge and Chevy RM cars would be at a huge disadvantage. So, everyone else, grab one of them!! I need all the help I can get!!

Interesting, thanks for the tests Jason.

BTW what other Premium American Classic Muscle cars would you suggest?

I don't want to allow Standard (used cars) because of their random availability.

The other premium "muscle" cars are;

1969 Chevrolet Corvette
1966 Shelby AC Cobra 427
1960 Art Morrison Corvette (SEMA car)
1970 Ford Mustang Trans-Cammer (SEMA car)

Other than the Trans Cammer Mustang, they are not technically muscle cars, but neither are the Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger. They were considered Pony cars, and the Chevelles, GTO's, Chargers, etc were the true muscle cars.

Ok excluding the SEMA cars, can the 1969 Chevrolet Corvette & 1966 Shelby AC Cobra 427 make 600pp?

I just built them up and the Vette tops out at 561 and the Cobra at 585. The cobra has 708hp and only weighs in at 918kg, so I would think it'd run with the 600's no problem. The only thing is that body mods are not allowed on that car, so you cannot even get any rear downforce. IMO keep the RM cars, or run a series with the same cars, but no RM allowed. I prefer the RM.

One of the shops I worked at back in the day had a client who owns the original #6 that Donohue drove to the 69 Trans Am championship. He also owned the Posey Challenger and the Swede Savage AMC Javelin. We also had a couple other clients with vintage TA cars, Gurney Challenger, Jones Mustang etc. They basically had the entire field under one roof. They were pretty cool, but man they were getting soft. Too much 'thinning' of the sheet metal.

Did he have the '68 that they put 69 trim on to fake into the 69 series, or did they have the full weight 69 that they used to qualify both cars?? They were told never to bring the 68 back, so they put on 69 trim, and used a full weight 69 running under both numbers (they would change the numbers in the shop or in the trailer) to qualify!

I would have loved to see that collection!! That era is my all time high when it comes to racing.

Here's a link to a pile of photos of it. They were cool and all, but I was buried deep in World Challenge cars at the time and really didn't have enough time to appreciate it and the history around them.

http://canepa.com/inventory/racecar_1/P ... index.html

I worked at the shop in 04-06, a short while after I left it was heavily damaged at a historic race. It was completely restored for the photos that are in that link. As far as which chassis it was, the history said it was the 69 championship winner, built prior to the 69 season. For what its worth, it was pretty well known around the track that it was THE car.

Man I love that car. I love the interior shots, top level safety was a little more, shall we say, roomy, back then!! I would love to see that car up close someday.

Holy crap, they've got the Smokey Yunick Chevelle too!! Yunick is one of my automotive heroes...

I've got both of mine painted up and ready to go!! With all the testing I've done, I like the Dodge being at 50/50 weight balance, and I find it better at braking and through mid turn. They are both equal, with MAYBE a slight edge to the Dodge, down the straight, and the Camaro is better on exit. I think the Dodge may be the car with more potential, but the Camaro is more user friendly out of the box.

I don't have any weight added to the Camaro, still at 55/45 (?) and it handles great, and I'm right at 600pp. I'm going to be on for a while today testing, if anyone sees me in the lounge, feel free to drop in!

*EDIT* Camaro is at 565hp, 1105kg, 20kg of ballast

How does that compare to you front runners? :?

yeah, I'm running a bottom 1:16, might be able to eek out a few more tenths if I was able to get a consistent good lap in, I'll be a bit faster in one section, then lose it a bit in the next from pushing to hard...
