Next weekend is round 2 of the GT2 World Series, so our little Canadian team is back in acton.

Image

As per series rules, the top 10 teams in points are automatically locked in, and the rest of us need to Pre-Qualify for 20 spots.

----

I must say, as far as online series goes, this is incredibly fun. The series is extremely well-organised, the competition is fierce but for the most part clean, and the races are spread out just far enough to be able to race without turning into a hermit every weekend :P

A lot of the other teams are really full-time deals, with dedicated websites, private servers running 24/7, massive setup databases, crowds of drivers complete with specialised "setup gurus" that spend their days off refining and pumping out new setups for their teams. (Some teams registered with as many as 15-20 drivers, then pick the fastest 4 for each event).

We certainly cannot compete with that kind of set-up and are somewhat the "Minardi" of the GT2 series. We are just a group of 4 guys who love racing, but in two seasons we have qualified for every event so far, and even finished 17th in the last race of last year at South City.

Image

Look for car #98, Angry Angus Racing

- For hours 1 and 2, the car will be run by Zoltán Gácsi, our Hungarian team-mate.
- The final hour will be run by yours truly! My first GT2 World Series action since the 2011 Kyoto 3 Hour last September!

After a few teams were unable to make the race, 25 cars will be in the field. We start 19th.

Race Review:

Pre-Race
Coming into the race, we had a big tire durability issue. Most teams would be running 3x1 hour stints and we would need to do much the same to stay competitive... but only Zoltan could get his tires to last that long.

Jonathan could run 50 minutes on a set, and I could get maybe 55 minutes.

With a minimum 2 drivers needed, Zoltan would run the first 2 stints in a hope to stretch a little bit past 1 hour each time, then put me in the car to finish and hope for the best.

Race
Zoltan ran well early, going as high as 13th before overheating tires struck again. His tires rapidly deteriorated near the end of the first hour and pitted after just 52 minutes. Uh oh...

His second stint went well, we ran in 15th position and this time he did make it past the hour mark so I had to run 65 minutes to get us to the end of the race. Something I never achieved in practice.

Running as gently as I possibly could, the tires stayed relatively cool, even though I was not breaking any world records on the lap charts. With 15 minutes to go I passed #13 Absolute Beginners (see video below) and looked like we would get our best-ever 15th place finish...............

....but on the last lap of the race, 2 miles from the start/finish line the RF tire finally gives out and I limp back to the pits to end the race, classified a still-respectable 16th place!

The race had it's fair share of challenges, but it was still our best result to date!

Round 3 is at the very hilly and technical Fern Bay Black Circuit on July 7th!

What do you mean by "give out". A virtual flat tire?

Yeah. Exactly that.

I actually ran until they popped in practice, just to see how running with a flat felt. It got me back across the finish line without spinning out or making too much of a fool of myself :orglaugh: , but I lost the 15th place I had made up earlier.
